Restaurant Val 2.0 – Modern Dalmatian Cuisine by the Sea in Kut

Restaurant Val 2.0 is situated on a small square right by the coast in Kut, located in the eastern part of the town of Vis. The terrace, shaded by tall palm trees, is just a few metres from the sea, making this one of the restaurants where the location is a significant part of the overall experience – diners sit by the waterfront, overlooking the boats and moorings of Kut, yet it is slightly removed from the busier area around the ferry port.

The name 2.0 signifies a continuation of the former restaurant Val, but with a more modern approach to cuisine and decor. The foundation remains Vis: fresh fish, seafood, island vegetables, olive oil, citrus fruits, and local wines, but traditional Dalmatian flavours are presented in a more contemporary manner than in a classic konoba.

Val 2.0 is therefore a good choice for a more serious lunch or dinner by the sea, without an overly formal atmosphere.

Fish and Seafood at the Heart of the Menu

Fish is one of the main reasons to visit Val 2.0. The restaurant particularly emphasises fresh, locally sourced ingredients, and the seafood menu reflects what is available in Vis and the Adriatic.

The menu features tuna tartare and tataki, fish carpaccio, prawns, monkfish, lobster, and various other fish dishes, with offerings depending on daily availability. Some fish is prepared very simply, for instance on the grill, while other dishes are combined with more modern sauces, vegetables, and sides.

This strikes a good balance between traditional and modern. When ordering fresh fish, its flavour remains at the forefront, while starters, risottos, and other dishes allow the kitchen to play more with textures and combinations.

Octopus prepared under a peka is also on offer, introducing a traditional Dalmatian technique into a more modern restaurant concept.

Risottos, Pasta, and Meat Dishes

The menu is not limited to fish. It includes soups, risottos, and pasta, making the restaurant a suitable choice even when not everyone at the table is in the mood for seafood.

Risottos are available in both seafood and meat variations, and the menu also features more substantial meat dishes such as steaks. The concept is not to have dozens of different dishes, but rather a shorter selection that can adapt to the season and available ingredients.

This type of menu makes particular sense in Vis, where the quality of fresh fish, vegetables, and other local products varies significantly with the seasons.

Local Lemons and Other Island Ingredients

One detail that Val 2.0 particularly highlights is Vis lemons and other citrus fruits. The climate of Vis is well-suited for citrus cultivation, so local lemons are used as part of the flavour and presentation of certain dishes, especially with fish and seafood.

The restaurant states that it strives to use locally grown and freshly caught ingredients with known provenance. This does not mean that every ingredient is from Vis, but local products have a clear place in the kitchen's concept.

This approach is especially evident in simpler fish dishes, where quality fish, olive oil, lemon, and a few good accompaniments often make more sense than complicated preparation.

Vugava and Plavac Mali with Dinner

Wine is another important aspect of the Vis experience, and Val 2.0 pays considerable attention to this.

The wine list prominently features local varieties Vugava and Plavac Mali. Vugava is a natural choice with fish and seafood, while Plavac Mali pairs better with stronger meat dishes. Alongside Vis wines, selected labels from other Croatian wine regions are also offered.

If trying Vis wine for the first time, it makes sense to ask which local wine best complements the ordered dish rather than automatically selecting a more familiar label from the mainland.

Terrace Under Palm Trees Right by the Sea

Val 2.0 is located in one of the more pleasant spots in Kut. Tables are arranged under palm trees on the square right by the coast, and there is no large thoroughfare between the terrace and the sea.

The ambience is particularly nice in the evening, when Kut fills with people strolling along the waterfront, yet it retains a different character from the main promenade in the port. Surrounding the tables are old stone houses, moored boats, and a small square, making the restaurant a natural fit for its location.

For dinner in July and August, the terrace is the most sought-after part of the restaurant, and it is advisable to reserve a table in advance.

Lunch or Dinner

Val 2.0 is not just an evening restaurant. According to the currently listed opening hours, it opens around noon, making it possible to come for lunch.

Lunch is a good option if a quieter atmosphere is desired and finding a table by the sea is easier. In the evening, Kut is livelier, restaurants fill up, and the terrace takes on a more evening vibe.

For dinner during the peak season, reservations are recommended. The restaurant does accept walk-in guests if there is availability, but it is advisable to book a table to avoid waiting.

Families and Special Dietary Requirements

Val 2.0 is not a restaurant aimed solely at couples or evening outings. Children are welcome, and high chairs and a special children's menu are available.

The restaurant also states that it can accommodate dishes for allergies and other dietary restrictions. If there is a serious allergy or specific dietary requirement, it is best to mention this when making a reservation and to confirm with the staff before ordering.

The dress code is not formal – the atmosphere is polished and somewhat more refined than a typical konoba, but there is no need for special evening attire.

How to Get There

Restaurant Val 2.0 is located in Kut, on the southeastern side of Vis Bay.

If coming from the main part of the town near the ferry terminal, the most pleasant way is to walk along the seaside promenade. It takes approximately 15 minutes of leisurely walking to reach Kut, depending on the starting point.

For sailors moored at the Kut marina, the restaurant is practically right next to the moorings, so it is just a few minutes' walk away.

Parking

The restaurant does not have a large private parking area immediately next to the terrace. Kut is an old part of Vis with limited space for cars, so it is not advisable to expect to park right by the restaurant.

If already staying in the town of Vis, the simplest option is to walk. When arriving by car from the interior of the island, it is best to use available public parking spaces in the wider area of Kut and continue the last part on foot.
