Biokovo mountain, a part of the mountain range of the Dinarides, was declared a nature park in 1981. This area is special due to its position, geomorphological forms and biodiversity. Its lower parts are predominantly Eocene flysch sediments, while the higher parts formed in Mesozoic are carbonate sedimentary rocks. Interestingly, in the foothills of the central part of Biokovo there is a fertile and green plateau at an altitude of about 300 meters, linked to the magnificent cliffs that rise to a height of about 1000 m, dividing the inland and the coast. As for the vegetation of the Biokovo mountain, it is extremely rich, forming a combination of Mediterranean, Boreal and Central European plants. The animal world is also very diverse, and here one can find 221 species of butterflies including Proterebia afra dalmata, the endemic one, amphibians, reptiles (many snakes, but only the viper is poisonous one), birds (three strictly protected: short-toed snake eagle, golden eagle, common kestrel) and numerous mammals. You'll probably stumble upon a Balkan chamois while discovering trails or climbing up to magnificent viewpoints of Biokovo. The park is open for visits and tours from April 1st to November 15th. Opening hours of the park are from 8 to 16 in the period from April 1st to May 15th, and October 1st to November 15th. During the summer season from May 15th to October 1st, the opening hours are from 7 to 20. Ticket price is about 6.5 euros. There are also tickets with 50% discount available for educational institutions, hiking and similar associations, trade unions, humanitarian and veterans' associations and cyclists. For children younger than 7 years admission is free. There are various guided tours available by appointment and payment in advance. You can find additional information on the website of the Nature Park Biokovo.
