Šipova Beach – A Natural Sandy Cove near Maslinica

Šipova Beach is located to the west of Maslinica, in a tranquil cove surrounded by rocky slopes and Mediterranean vegetation. It is notable for being considered the only natural sandy beach on Šolta, although fine gravel and stones can also be found along the shore.

We often recommend Šipova to those seeking a more natural bathing spot, clear waters, and a quieter atmosphere away from the centre of Maslinica. The beach is not large, which gives it a more intimate character, especially outside the peak summer crowds.

What is Šipova Beach like?

The beach is situated at the end of the cove. The central part of the shore is the most comfortable for entering the water, while the edges are dominated by rocks and larger stones.

The seabed in the shallows is predominantly sandy, and the entry into the water is gentle and gradual. This makes Šipova pleasant for families with children and bathers who prefer not to deal with steep rocky shores, which are common on Šolta.

On calm days, the water is very clear, and due to the lighter seabed, it takes on beautiful turquoise hues. The edges of the cove are good for swimming and snorkelling, while the central shallower area is more suitable for relaxed bathing.

Most people will not need water shoes at the main entrance, but they may be useful if swimming near the rocky edges of the cove.

Natural Shade

Surrounding the cove is Mediterranean vegetation, but there is no reliable natural shade on the beach throughout the day. The shade from the surrounding slopes changes depending on the sun's position, so one should not rely on shade during the hottest hours.

For a longer stay, it is advisable to bring a sun umbrella, plenty of water, and sun protection. Mornings are more pleasant, especially in summer, when the sand and stones heat up considerably later in the day.

How to Get There by Car

To reach Šipova from Maslinica, take the road towards the western part of the island. The road is now asphalted all the way to the cove, making access by car significantly easier than before.

The road is local, narrow, and winding, so it is important to drive slowly and be prepared to pass oncoming vehicles. In some sections, there is not much space, especially during July and August when traffic to the beach increases.

A regular passenger car can reach the cove without the need for an off-road vehicle or driving on unpaved roads.

Parking at Šipova Beach

Parking is available in the area just before the beach and at the end of the road. It is not a large, organised public car park, so the number of spaces is limited.

During the peak season, it is best to arrive early as available spots fill up quickly. Vehicles should be parked in a way that does not block the road, turning points, access to properties, or passage for other cars.

When all nearby spots are taken, cars should be parked further along the road in a safe widening, and the last part should be walked to the beach.

Walking from Maslinica

It is also possible to walk to the beach from Maslinica. The path follows an asphalt road through a quieter and uninhabited part of western Šolta.

The walk is not particularly demanding, but during summer, there is not enough shade for much of the route. It is best to start early in the morning or later in the afternoon and to bring plenty of water.

The return to Maslinica can be somewhat tiring due to the uphill sections and summer heat, especially if carrying many items for the beach.

Facilities at the Beach

There are no tourist or hospitality facilities at the beach, so all necessities for your stay should be brought from Maslinica.

It is advisable to bring enough water, a light meal, a sun umbrella, and a bag for waste. The nearest shops, cafés, and restaurants are located in Maslinica.

Šipova is a natural beach and is not maintained in the same way as urban bathing areas. After windy weather and rough seas, seaweed, branches, and other natural materials may wash up on the shore.

Is Šipova Suitable for Children?

Due to the gentle entry into the water and sandy bottom, Šipova is among the more pleasant beaches on Šolta for children. The shallows provide more space for play than most rocky bathing spots on the island.

However, the beach is small and does not have much flat space for laying out towels and equipment. During peak season, several families can occupy a large part of the central shore, so it is best to arrive early.

Pushchairs can be brought along the asphalt road close to the cove, but the final access to the shore and movement on the sand, gravel, and stones is not entirely practical.

Arriving by Boat

Šipova is also beautiful from the sea, and during summer, small boats can often be seen in the cove. There are no organised moorings or a marina, and vessels anchor at their own discretion.

When anchoring, care should be taken regarding depth, seabed, bathers, and weather conditions. Boats should not approach the shallows or the main part of the beach.

When stronger winds blow from the open sea, the cove can become choppy and less pleasant for staying. It is at its best in stable weather and light winds.

The Best Time to Visit

The best time to visit Šipova is in the morning. At this time, the road is quieter, parking is more accessible, and the beach is not yet crowded.

June and September are particularly pleasant as the sea is warm enough, and the number of visitors is lower than in July and August. During the peak season, the beach is no longer completely secluded, but it still retains a more natural atmosphere than bathing areas closer to the centre of Maslinica.

Evenings are also enjoyable as the sun weakens, but one should consider that the cove begins to be shaded by the surrounding slopes earlier.

Who Will Enjoy Šipova?

Šipova Beach is the best choice for those who appreciate natural coves, sandy seabeds, gentle entries into the water, and swimming without large tourist facilities.

It will particularly appeal to families with children, couples, and visitors looking to spend a few hours away from the busier parts of Maslinica. It may be less suitable for those seeking large spaces, organised amenities, and guaranteed free parking right by the beach.

The greatest advantage of Šipova today is the combination of its natural appearance and easier access. The asphalt road leads all the way to the cove, yet the beach has retained a quieter character and one of the most beautiful sandy bottoms on Šolta.
