Fjera in Splitska – traditional celebration of the Assumption of Mary

The Splitska Fair is an annual traditional event held in the town of Splitska on the island of Brač on the occasion of the feast of the Assumption (August 15) . This event combines religious tradition, local culture, entertainment and gastronomy , and brings together locals and visitors from all over the island and the wider region.

The word fjera in Dalmatia means a large celebration or feast , often associated with the patron saint of the place or an important holiday. In the context of Split, fjera is celebrated in honor of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary , one of the most important Catholic holidays in Croatia.

Program and contents

The Fair program usually takes place over two days around August 14th and 15th and includes:

  • Fisherman's evening on the eve of the holiday (August 14th) with music and local dishes.
  • Solemn mass celebration and procession through the town on August 15th, starting around 6:30 PM in honor of the patron saint.
  • Musical performances and a concert – including musical performers from the region (e.g. the duo Koperonti and singer Minea), which are traditionally held in the evening hours.
  • A social atmosphere with music, dancing, local specialties and socializing , which often continues late into the night.

The fair is an opportunity for the entire community to gather, celebrate and preserve tradition , with a combination of religious and secular elements of celebration.
