Caffe Bar Speed in Komiža

Caffe Bar Speed is located in Škoro, in the old part of Komiža, just a short walk from the waterfront, but sufficiently tucked away among stone houses to provide a different atmosphere compared to cafes by the sea. It does not offer a view over the harbor or a large tourist terrace, which makes it feel more like a regular gathering place rather than a venue that one visits simply because it is on the promenade.

Speed is particularly good for morning coffee. It opens early, and Škoro is much quieter at that time of day compared to the waterfront. Later, the atmosphere changes, and the same tables become a spot for cold beer, bevanda, spirits, or a quick drink before dinner.

Coffee in the Old Part of Komiža

If you are staying in the center, Speed is convenient for a first coffee before heading to the beach or a boat. It can be reached from the waterfront in a few minutes, but it does not feel like sitting in the midst of tourist traffic.

The terrace is situated among the old Komiža houses and narrow streets, so there are no cars passing by the tables, nor the crowds that form along the main coast. In the morning, the rhythm of the place is more palpable: someone comes for coffee before work, another reads the newspaper, and guests staying in nearby houses quickly start using it as their neighborhood cafe.

There is no need to plan a visit to Speed specifically. It works best when stumbled upon while heading towards the waterfront or when wanting to take a short break from it.

More of a Local Cafe than a Tourist Bar

There are many establishments in Komiža that are almost entirely focused on the summer season. Speed has a slightly different character. It is simple, does not attempt to be a cocktail bar or a modern café, and the offerings revolve around what one comes to such a café for – coffee, beer, wine, soft drinks, and spirits.

Among the drinks, it is worth asking if they have homemade carob liqueur. Carob is a common ingredient in local liqueurs on Vis, and such a drink is more interesting to try in a small local bar than to order something that can be found anywhere.

For more serious cocktails, there are specialized bars on the waterfront. Speed is better when one wants espresso, cold beer, or a simple drink without any special ceremony.

Škoro is a Big Part of the Reason to Sit Here

Speed is located just a few dozen meters from the sea, but its position in Škoro completely changes the atmosphere. This part of Komiža consists of old stone houses, narrow streets, and small spaces between them that become a sort of neighborhood living room in the summer.

Because of this, it is a good place to take a break while exploring old Komiža. One can turn inland from the waterfront, sit for coffee, and then continue towards Gusarica, Cukro, or further through the old streets.

It is especially pleasant when the sun is strong on the waterfront. The houses around Škoro create more shade during parts of the day than the open coast, making a break here more comfortable than sitting at a table fully exposed to the sun.

Mornings and Evenings Have Different Atmospheres

In the morning, Speed is primarily a café. People come for espresso, long coffee, or something cold before starting their day.

In the late afternoon and evening, beer, wine, and spirits are more commonly ordered, and the terrace becomes livelier. However, it is not a place for loud nightlife. It is better suited for conversation and drinks before or after dinner than for a long night with loud music.

This simplicity is one of the reasons why it is easy to return here multiple times during a holiday. After a few days, one no longer thinks about where to have coffee – it is simply a turn off the waterfront towards Škoro.

Not a Place for Lunch

Speed should primarily be viewed as a caffe bar, not as a restaurant. I would not choose it when looking for breakfast with a wide selection of food or a substantial lunch.

The advantage is that it is very close to the center. Bakeries, pastry shops, and restaurants are just a few minutes away, making it easy to combine Speed with other places: coffee here, something sweet at Cukro or Gelateria Riva, and lunch at the waterfront.

This is useful to know when visiting with children – for juice and a short break, it is quite practical, but it does not have the amenities that would make a family plan to spend a longer part of the day here.

How to Get There and Parking

It takes just a few minutes to walk from the main part of the Komiža waterfront to Speed. One turns among the houses towards Škoro and quickly arrives at the venue.

Arriving by car does not make much sense. The old part of Komiža has narrow streets and very little parking space, so it is best to leave the vehicle in a public parking area and continue on foot through the center.

If you are already staying in Komiža, Speed is exactly the type of place you go to without thinking about transportation.

Who Will Enjoy Speed the Most

Speed will appeal most to guests who prefer small local cafes over large terraces by the waterfront. It is good for morning coffee, a break during the day, or simply an evening drink in the old part of town.

One should not expect a spectacular view, designer interior, or an extensive cocktail menu. Its advantage lies elsewhere – it is just a few steps from the main waterfront, but in an atmosphere that is much closer to everyday Komiža.

If, during your stay, you are looking for a place to have coffee without a tourist agenda and to return again the next morning, Speed is exactly that type of café.
