Caffe Bar Speed in Komiža
Caffe Bar Speed is situated in Škor, in the old part of Komiža, only a short walk from the waterfront, yet tucked away among stone houses, it offers a distinctly different atmosphere compared to the cafés by the sea. There are no views over the harbour or large tourist terraces, which makes it feel more like a regular spot rather than a place you only visit because it’s on the promenade.
Speed is particularly good for morning coffee. It opens early, and Škor is much quieter at that time of day compared to the waterfront. Later, the atmosphere shifts, and the same tables become a place for cold beer, bevanda, spirits, or a quick drink before dinner.
Coffee in the Old Part of Komiža
If you’re staying in the centre, Speed is a convenient choice for your first coffee before heading to the beach or catching a boat. It’s just a few minutes from the waterfront, but you won’t feel like you’re sitting in the midst of tourist traffic.
The terrace is nestled among the old Komiža houses and narrow streets, so there are no cars passing by your table, nor the crowds that gather along the main waterfront. In the morning, the rhythm of the place is more palpable: someone comes for coffee before work, another reads the newspaper, and guests staying in nearby houses quickly start using it as their local café.
There’s no need to plan a visit to Speed specifically. It works best when you happen upon it on your way to the waterfront or want to take a brief break from it.
More of a Local Café than a Tourist Bar
There are plenty of establishments in Komiža that cater almost exclusively to the summer season. Speed has a slightly different character. It’s simple, doesn’t try to be a cocktail bar or a modern café, and its offerings revolve around what you come to such a place for – coffee, beer, wine, soft drinks, and spirits.
Among the drinks, it’s worth asking if they have homemade carob liqueur. Carob is a common ingredient in local liqueurs on Vis, and such a drink is more interesting to try in a small local bar than to order something you could have anywhere.
For more serious cocktails, there are specialised bars along the waterfront. Speed is better suited for when you want an espresso, a cold beer, or a simple drink without any fuss.
Škor is a Big Part of the Reason to Sit Down
Speed is located just a few dozen metres from the sea, but its position in Škor completely changes the atmosphere. This part of Komiža is characterised by old stone houses, narrow streets, and the small spaces between them that become a sort of neighbourhood living room in the summer.
This makes it a great spot to take a break while exploring old Komiža. You can turn off the waterfront, sit down for a coffee, and then continue on to Gusarica, Cukra, or further through the old streets.
It’s particularly pleasant when the sun is strong on the waterfront. The houses around Škor create more shade during parts of the day than the open coast, so a break here can be more comfortable than sitting at a table fully exposed to the sun.
Mornings and Evenings Have Different Atmospheres
In the morning, Speed is primarily a café. People come for espresso, long coffee, or something cold before starting their day.
In the evening, beer, wine, and spirits are more commonly ordered, and the terrace becomes livelier. However, it’s not a place for loud nightlife. It’s better suited for conversation and drinks before or after dinner rather than a long night with loud music.
This simplicity is one of the reasons why it’s easy to return here multiple times during your holiday. After a few days, you no longer think about where to have coffee – you simply turn off the waterfront towards Škor.
Not a Place for Lunch
Speed should primarily be regarded as a café bar, not a restaurant. I wouldn’t choose it if you’re looking for a breakfast with a wide selection of food or a proper lunch.
The advantage is that it’s very close to the centre. Bakeries, patisseries, and restaurants are just a few minutes away, so Speed can easily be combined with other places: coffee here, something sweet at Cukra or Gelaterija Riva, and lunch on the waterfront.
This is useful to know if you’re visiting with children – it’s quite practical for a juice and a short break, but it doesn’t have the amenities that would make a family plan to spend a longer part of the day here.
How to Get There and Parking
It takes just a few minutes to walk from the main part of the Komiža waterfront to Speed. You turn in among the houses towards Škor and quickly arrive at the café.
Driving there doesn’t make much sense. The old part of Komiža has narrow streets and very little parking space, so it’s best to leave your vehicle in a public car park and continue on foot through the centre.
If you’re already staying in Komiža, Speed is exactly the type of place you go to without thinking about transport.
Who Will Enjoy Speed the Most
Speed will appeal most to guests who prefer small local cafés over large terraces by the waterfront. It’s good for morning coffee, a daytime break, or simply an evening drink in the old part of town.
Don’t expect a spectacular view, designer interior, or an extensive cocktail menu. Its advantage lies elsewhere – you sit just a few steps from the main waterfront, but in an atmosphere that feels much closer to everyday life in Komiža.
If you’re looking for a place to have coffee without the tourist programme and want to return the next morning, Speed is just that kind of café.
