Riva Restaurant Vis – Coffee, Breakfast, and Food by the Sea

Riva Restaurant, also known as the traditional Caffe Bar Riva, is situated on St. George's Waterfront in the center of the town of Vis. The tables are located right by the waterfront, just a few steps from the sea and moored boats, making it a place that is used quite differently depending on the time of day.

In the morning, people come for coffee and breakfast, during the day for a sandwich, salad, or a more substantial lunch, and in the evening, Riva remains a spot for dinner, a glass of wine, or drinks in the lively atmosphere of the Vis waterfront.

This is not a hidden tavern or a restaurant with a grand gastronomic concept. The main advantage of Riva is its very practical location by the sea and a wide range of offerings, making it suitable for guests who want to sit briefly as well as those looking for a simple meal in the city center.

Terrace Right by the Vis Waterfront

The location is Riva's greatest asset.

The tables are along St. George's Waterfront, in a part of the town's waterfront frequented by locals, tourists, and sailors throughout the day.

In front are the sea and boats, and across the bay, there is a view of other parts of the town of Vis.

This means that the ambiance is not particularly quiet or isolated. During the day, one can feel the true rhythm of the town – people pass by, boats arrive, and especially during the summer, the waterfront is almost never completely empty.

If a hidden garden is desired, Pojoda or Lola offer a very different experience. Riva is a place for guests for whom the view of the harbor and life by the coast is part of the atmosphere.

Morning Coffee and Breakfast

Riva opens early, making it sensible to visit in the morning.

In addition to classic coffee, there is a breakfast menu, which is particularly practical if staying in the center of Vis or heading to the ferry, excursion boat, or beach in the morning.

The current breakfast offerings include various options, including more substantial cooked breakfasts, vegetarian varieties, and sandwiches.

Thus, Riva is not just a place for a quick espresso. It can also serve as a proper morning meal before starting the day.

For guests who do not want to search for a specialized brunch spot, this is a simple and practical solution.

Sandwiches, Burgers, and Salads for a Simple Lunch

During the day, the menu becomes more substantial.

Among the regularly featured dishes are sandwiches, burgers, salads, and meat dishes, making Riva a good option when one wants to eat something without a formal multi-course dinner.

This is useful for families or larger groups where not everyone wants to order fish or traditional Dalmatian dishes.

After a morning at the beach, one can sit down for a burger or salad, eat something quickly, and continue the day without going to a classic tavern.

It is precisely in this simplicity that Riva finds its function.

There Are Also More Traditional Croatian Dishes

Although the menu is quite broad and international, Riva is not limited to just burgers and sandwiches.

Current guest experiences also include homemade Croatian dishes such as pašticada with gnocchi, along with other meat and fish options.

The offerings may change during the season, so it does not make sense to plan a visit around a specific dish.

If something more local is desired, it is best to ask what they have available that day beyond the simplest part of the menu.

For a more serious gastronomic dinner focused solely on traditional Vis cuisine, there are more specialized restaurants, but Riva can be a good choice when different types of food are sought at the same table.

Fish and Seafood Are Not the Only Focus

The menu features fish and seafood, but I would not describe Riva as a classic fish restaurant.

The concept is much broader.

Here, it is equally natural to come for burgers, salads, meat, or sandwiches as it is for fish dishes.

This is an important distinction compared to Pojoda or traditional taverns, where the daily catch is the main reason for visiting.

Riva is more of a day-long city restaurant and bar by the sea.

A Good Place for a Glass of Wine or Evening Drink

Riva retains some of the character of a café bar even after the kitchen becomes more significant during the day.

Along with coffee, wine, beer, and other alcoholic beverages are available, so one does not have to sit at a table solely for food.

In the evening, it is particularly pleasant to simply order a glass of wine and watch the boats in the harbor.

This aligns with the traditional identity of the establishment – the Tourist Board of Vis still refers to it as Caffe Bar RIVA.

Therefore, there is no strange transition between a restaurant and a bar. Throughout the day, the space naturally changes its function.

Close to the Ferry Port, Yet Outside the Main Crowds

Riva is located very close to the central part of the town and the ferry port.

From the place where the ferries dock, it is a short walk along the waterfront, but the establishment is not right in the vehicle boarding area.

This is practical on the last day of vacation.

If there is some time left before the boat departs, one can have coffee or something to eat here and then continue directly to the ferry without a long detour.

The same applies after arriving in Vis, especially if accommodation is not yet ready.

A Good Stop Between Luka and Kut

Riva is located on a natural walking route through the town of Vis.

If walking from the ferry port and the center towards Kut, one passes right by this part of the waterfront.

Therefore, there is no need to plan a visit to Riva as a special outing.

It can be included in a walk around the town – coffee in the morning, lunch during sightseeing, or drinks on the return from Kut.

Nearby are numerous palaces, churches, and other historical details of the town's core, making the location well-suited for guests exploring Vis on foot.

A Practical Option for Families

The wider offering makes Riva a simple choice for families with children.

Not everyone is forced to choose from a menu that consists almost exclusively of fish and seafood, and sandwiches, burgers, and other more familiar dishes are often more practical for younger guests.

The flat urban location without stairs and difficult access is also an advantage.

After a meal, one can immediately continue walking along the waterfront.

Parking in the Center of Vis

Riva does not make sense as a restaurant that one tries to reach by car as close to the table as possible.

It is located right on the town's waterfront, where parking space is limited and very busy during the summer.

If staying in the town of Vis, it is best to arrive on foot.

For guests arriving from Rukavac, Milna, Rogačić, or another part of the island, it is more practical to use the available public parking in the wider center and then continue along the waterfront.

This is especially important during the arrival and departure of ferries when traffic around the port is much more intense.

When Does Riva Make the Most Sense?

Riva is a good example of a place that does not have just one ideal time for a visit.

In the morning, it is practical for coffee and breakfast.

Around noon and during the afternoon, it works well for a simple lunch, burger, or salad.

In the evening, one can come for dinner, while later it is quite natural to stay just for wine or another drink.

Due to this all-day rhythm, Riva suits guests who do not want to turn every meal into a special gastronomic event.

A Simple City Restaurant in a Good Location

Riva does not attempt to be the most sophisticated restaurant in Vis, and that is precisely why it is useful.

It is located right by the sea, in the city center, open from morning until late evening, and offers a sufficiently wide selection of food and drinks to serve various situations during a vacation.

It can be a place for the first morning coffee, lunch after the beach, dinner with family, or just wine while watching the boats in the Vis harbor.

For guests looking for an accessible and informal restaurant by the waterfront, without the need for special dinner planning, Riva is one of the more practical choices in the center of the town of Vis.
