Nečujam on Šolta – guide to the largest island bay, beaches, restaurants, and attractions

Nečujam is located on the northern coast of the island of Šolta, in the largest and most indented bay on the island. When viewed from the sea or from the road descending towards the coast, the place does not resemble a typical Dalmatian settlement clustered around a single waterfront. Houses and apartments are spread around a wide bay and several smaller coves, resulting in distinct differences between various parts of Nečujam. The center features the main beach, a shop, pools, and most dining establishments, while moving towards Tiha, Sabina, Piškera, Podkamenica, and Šumpjivina leads to quieter parts of the coast.

Nečujam is the youngest settlement on Šolta, but the area of its bay has been used since ancient times. Tourism developed more significantly here during the second half of the 20th century, when a large apartment complex was built near the main beach. Before the 1990s, Nečujam was among the more well-known Adriatic tourist destinations, and it still has the highest concentration of apartments and family-friendly amenities on the island.

The place does not have a large old waterfront like Stomorska or a well-preserved historical core like Grohote. Its main value lies in the vast sheltered bay, a variety of swimming spots, a good selection of restaurants, and the possibility to spend an entire holiday close to the sea. At the same time, several important historical sites indicate that Nečujam is not just an apartment settlement and summer bathing spot.

How to get to Nečujam

To reach Šolta from Split, take a ferry or catamaran to Rogač, the main island port. From Rogač, you can continue to Nečujam by car, taxi, or local bus. Nečujam is included in the island bus line connecting Rogač, Grohote, Nečujam, Gornje Selo, and Stomorska, with the schedule aligned with some ferry arrivals and departures. However, the number of rides is not comparable to urban transport, so it is advisable to check the current timetable before traveling.

A car is useful if you plan to explore the rest of Šolta, but it is not necessary for staying in the central part of Nečujam. The main beach, shop, cafes, and several restaurants are located close to each other. A vehicle becomes more practical for reaching the more distant parts of the bay, especially Podkamenica, Šumpjivina, and the northeastern coast towards Konoba Sveti Petar.

Parking is easiest in public and shared areas around the apartment complex and the main beach. In July and August, the closest spots by the sea are quickly taken. Side streets leading to Tiha, Sabina, and the western coves are mostly paved but narrow, occasionally steep, and often lack designated parking. It is advisable not to drive to the end of each street without checking for parking and turning space.

Main beach Nečujam or Supetar beach

The central bathing area is marked on maps as Supetar beach, but most visitors refer to it as Nečujam Beach or simply the main beach. Supetar is the local name for this smaller cove within the large Nečujam bay and has no connection to the town of Supetar on Brač.

The beach is spacious, predominantly pebbly, and is the most practical for families with children. The entry into the sea is generally gradual, and the inner part of the bay is often calm. Behind the beach are the apartment complex, a shop, children's facilities, dining establishments, and an area known for its pools. The official Croatian tourist portal also presents Nečujam as a diverse bathing area with several coves, while the central pebbly section is the main organized bathing area of the place.

There is not enough natural shade for all bathers. Some shade is provided by trees along the coastal edge and behind the beach, but most of the pebbles remain exposed to the sun during the day. The beach can get crowded during the peak season, especially around noon, but it is here that food, drinks, and other practical amenities are closest.

Along the beach are Phil’s Beach Bar, Cafe Bar Tamaris, and Konoba Tamaris. Phil’s offers drinks and simpler dishes such as pizzas, burgers, and grilled food. Cafe Bar Tamaris is convenient for coffee and cold drinks just a few steps from the towels, while Konoba Tamaris has a broader menu featuring pizzas, fish, seafood, meat, and dishes cooked under a bell.

Quieter beaches and coves of Nečujam

The large Nečujam bay consists of eight smaller coves: Supetar, Bok Supetra, Šumpjivina, Podkamenica, Maslinica, Tiha, Bok od Rata, and Piškera. Due to this indented nature, it is not possible to reduce the entire place to a single beach.

Tiha beach is located in the populated eastern part of the bay. It is smaller than the main beach and consists of pebbly, rocky, and concreted sections. The sea is sheltered, but there are private boats along the coast. There is not a wide selection of amenities at the beach, and parking is limited to spots along narrow local streets.

Further north is a coastal stretch known as Sabina. Locals often refer to this area as Put Rata or Bok od Rata. The coast is not a single regular beach but a combination of rocks, concreted platforms, and smaller pebbly entries. The more distant rocky part is also used for naturist bathing, but the entire Sabina is not officially designated as a nudist beach.

On the western side of the large bay are Podkamenica and Šumpjivina. These are small local coves accessible via narrow paved roads. There are no beach bars, sunbed rentals, or large parking areas here. Bathers are spread across small pebbly sections, piers, concreted surfaces, and natural rocks. The advantage of these coves is a quieter atmosphere, while the downside is that water, food, and equipment need to be brought along.

Nečujam thus caters to different types of guests. Families who prioritize a gentle entry into the sea and proximity to amenities most often choose the main beach. Those who value less crowding head towards Tiha, Sabina, Podkamenica, or Šumpjivina. It should be noted that access by car to the more distant coves is less practical and that there is no public infrastructure like in the center.

Restaurants, taverns, and bars

Nečujam has a more diverse dining offer than it may initially seem. The highest concentration of establishments is around the main beach, but some of the more interesting restaurants are located in the quieter parts of the bay.

Konoba Tamaris is convenient for lunch after swimming as it is located right next to the central bathing area. The menu includes pizzas, fish, squid, grilled meat, pasta, and dishes cooked under a bell. Nearby is the separate Cafe Bar Tamaris, primarily intended for coffee and drinks.

Restaurant Punta is located on the eastern side of the central part of the bay. Its terrace faces west, making it particularly pleasant for dinner. The menu focuses on fish, seafood, meat, and grilled vegetables, and the ambiance is quieter than right at the beach center.

Konoba Mareta is situated on the western side of Nečujam, towards Podkamenica. It is known for its fish dishes, seafood, grilled meats, and the option to arrive by boat. Since the road access is narrower, reservations and early arrival facilitate finding a table and parking.

Konoba Kod Joze differs from typical restaurants as it operates by prior arrangement. Here, tables and desired dishes, especially peka, larger fish, or group dinners, are reserved in advance. It resembles a home courtyard and family dinner more than a classic restaurant with a large permanent menu.

On the northeastern side of the bay is Konoba Sveti Petar. It is reached from the center intentionally, but in return, it offers a quieter terrace, fresh fish, and the possibility of arriving by boat with prior arrangement for mooring.

Laganini bar is located by the sea on the eastern side of the bay, towards Tiha. It is most suitable for guests who want to combine swimming with coffee, drinks, or evening cocktails. There is no wide pebbly beach next to the terrace, as entry into the sea is from rocky and concreted sections, making it more suitable for confident swimmers.

House of Marko Marulić and St. Peter's Church

The most important cultural landmark in Nečujam is the House of Marko Marulić. It is located near the main beach and can easily be included in a short walk through the central part of the place. It was once the summer residence of Dujmo Balistrilić, a Split nobleman, priest, and friend and godfather of Marulić.

Marko Marulić stayed in Nečujam as Balistrilić's guest, and the peace and solitude of the large bay left a mark on his writings. This place is also associated with Petar Hektorović, who arrived in Nečujam in 1555 during a journey described in his work Fishing and Fisherman's Complaints. The Šolta Tourist Board highlights Nečujam as an important site of Croatian literary heritage due to Marulić and Hektorović.

The house has been restored and is used for exhibitions, screenings, literary programs, and other cultural events. It does not necessarily operate daily as a classic museum, so it is advisable to check the current program before planning a visit.

Nearby are the remains of St. Peter's Church. The church and Marulić's house are not immediate neighbors, as they are separated by a road and one building, but they belong to the same small historical area. The old church's apse and parts of the walls have been preserved, while a newer votive chapel stands next to the ruins. The site can be viewed from the outside, and there is no entrance fee.

Diocletian's fish pond in Piškera

The Piškera cove hides one of the most interesting ancient sites on Šolta. In the shallow sea are the remains of a Roman fish pond, a stone system that separated part of the cove for keeping live fish. The site is known as Diocletian's fish pond, which is used on maps, in the media, and in local tourist interpretations.

The existence of the ancient pond is archaeologically confirmed, while a direct connection to Emperor Diocletian has not been fully proven. In the broader area of Piškera, remains of a Roman economic and villa structure have also been recorded. Official tourist sources of Šolta's cultural heritage mention the ancient remains specifically in the Nečujam cove of Piškera.

A walking path has been arranged along the cove from which, on a calm and clear day, one can try to recognize the line of the submerged wall. The best view is provided when the sun is high, the sea is calm, and the surface is clear enough. The site can be explored without an entrance fee, but the underwater remains should not be touched or used for anchoring.

Nečujam for families, sailors, and guests without cars

For families with children, the main pebbly beach is the greatest advantage. Entry into the sea is easier than at the rocky parts of the island, and shops and food are nearby. The downsides are limited natural shade and larger crowds during the peak of summer.

Sailors appreciate the large and indented bay with several sheltered parts, but caution is advised when the bora wind blows. Restaurant moorings exist near some taverns, but their availability is not guaranteed without prior arrangement. Nečujam has long been popular among boats due to the size and relative protection of the bay.

Guests without cars can comfortably stay in the center of the place. The beach, shop, restaurants, and bus stop are accessible on foot. To explore the more distant coves and the rest of Šolta, one should use the bus, taxi, bicycle, scooter, or car rental.

What is Nečujam like as a holiday destination

Nečujam is the best choice on Šolta for guests who value a large beach, apartment accommodation, restaurants, and shops within walking distance. It is not the most romantic place on the island nor does it have a well-maintained stone waterfront lined with old houses. Part of the apartment complex and the area around the pools reflects tourism from the second half of the 20th century, which may not appeal to everyone.

On the other hand, few places on Šolta offer such a variety of swimming options within a single bay. In just a few kilometers, one can find the main family beach, small pebbly coves, rocky naturist sections, concreted piers, quiet corners without amenities, and restaurant terraces by the sea.

The best way to get to know Nečujam is not to stay only at the main beach. It is worthwhile to walk towards Tiha and Sabina, visit Piškera, see the House of Marko Marulić and the remains of St. Peter's Church, and at least once have dinner in the quieter part of the bay. Only then does it become clear that Nečujam is not a compact tourist settlement, but rather a series of smaller coastal areas connected by the largest bay on Šolta.
