Pražnica is one of the oldest and most authentic places on the island of Brač. Located in the heart of the island at approximately 360 metres above sea level, it is known as the highest permanently inhabited settlement on Brač and one of the centres of traditional stone masonry, livestock farming, and agriculture. Surrounded by rocky terrain, centuries-old olive groves, and pastures, Pražnica offers a distinctly different experience of Brač compared to its coastal tourist spots, making it an ideal destination for those wishing to learn about the island's authentic way of life.
The history of the settlement dates back to the Middle Ages, although archaeological findings confirm that this area was inhabited much earlier. Over the centuries, the residents have relied on sheep farming, viticulture, olive cultivation, and the processing of the renowned Brač stone. The stone has significantly influenced the development of Pražnica, with the skills of Brač stonemasons being passed down through generations, leaving a mark on the appearance of the settlement and numerous buildings across Croatia and beyond.
A stroll through Pražnica takes you along narrow stone streets, past traditional houses built from Brač stone, ancient water cisterns, courtyards, and dry stone walls that testify to the rich history of the area. In contrast to the bustling tourist centres along the coast, a tranquil atmosphere typical of an island village prevails here, where old customs and ways of life are still cherished.
The central landmark of the settlement is the Church of St. Anthony the Abbot, which dominates the main square and serves as the spiritual centre of Pražnica. Surrounding it are numerous smaller chapels, old wells, and remnants of shepherds' dwellings that reflect the long-standing connection between the inhabitants and nature and livestock farming.
Pražnica is particularly appealing to those who enjoy active holidays. Numerous walking and cycling trails connect the settlement with Vidova Gora, Gornji Humac, Pučišća, and Bol, passing through unspoiled landscapes interspersed with dry stone walls, olive groves, and pastures. This part of Brač is one of the best for exploring the traditional island landscape and enjoying panoramic views of the coast and surrounding islands.
The gastronomy of Pražnica is based on local Brač products and recipes that have been passed down through generations. In local taverns, one can sample Brač lamb, dishes cooked under a bell, homemade cheeses, fresh olive oil, seasonal vegetables, and local wines. Due to the long-standing tradition of livestock farming, lamb is one of the most renowned specialities of this part of the island.
One of the greatest advantages of Pražnica is its location. Situated almost in the centre of Brač, it serves as an excellent starting point for exploring the entire island. It takes less than half an hour by car to reach Bol, Zlatni Rat, Pučišća, Selca, Supetar, and other well-known places, while Vidova Gora and Brač Airport are just a few minutes' drive away.
Unlike coastal tourist destinations, Pražnica is not a place of large hotels and crowds. This is where its greatest value lies. Here, you will find an authentic stone village, welcoming hosts, unspoiled nature, and a peace that is increasingly hard to find in the Mediterranean today. Many visitors come precisely for this reason, to experience the true Brač – an island of stonemasons, olive growers, and winemakers.
If you wish to explore the interior of Brač and discover a place where traditions, stonemasonry skills, and the original Dalmatian way of life have been preserved for centuries, Pražnica is a destination well worth visiting. The blend of rich history, stone architecture, beautiful nature, and excellent local gastronomy makes this small settlement one of the most intriguing hidden gems of Brač.
