The area of Zumberak and Samobor hills, which covers about 333 km² of an isolated mountain area 30 km southwest from Zagreb, was declared a nature park in 1999. Karst covers almost 90% of the Park area. Its vegetation consists of beech and oak forests, meadows and pastures, rich in rare and protected plant species. Abundant aquatic life is also one of the Park's characteristics. Its fauna consists of a number of large and small mammals, birds, amphibians, reptiles, invertebrates, insects and others. When it comes to larger predators, we can encounter bears (Ursus arctos), wolfs (Canis lupus), and goshawks (Accipiter gentilis) here. There are also two venomous snakes living here: sand viper (Vipera ammodytes) and common European adder (Vipera berus). Since the Park has been continuously inhabited since prehistoric times, there are numerous archaeological sites dating from various periods. It is possible to visit some of them thanks to Park's educational paths. If you prefer active holidays, here you can engage in many activities, from hiking, climbing, caving, climbing, cycling, winter sports, horseback riding, to paragliding.
