Lastovo Archipelago, covering 195.83 km2, was declared a nature park in 2006, but a few years before that the World Organization for the Protection of Nature declared it a priority for preservation of the biodiversity of the Mediterranean. Lastovo itself is not a big island, but it is surrounded by 46 islets and reefs, icluding numerous coves, fields and hills, and more than 70% of its surface consists of forests. Active holiday enthusiasts will be delighted by its many marked cycling, hiking and field trails. History lovers will surely enjoy discovering around 40 island's medieval churches. The island, or the village of Ubli, can be reached from Split: by ferry in 4 hours and 15 minutes (once a day), with stops in Vela Luka (Korcula), and by catamaran in 2 hours and 45 minutes with stops in Hvar and Vela Luka. If you are arriving from Dubrovnik, Lastovo can be reached by catamaran (July and August) twice a week in 4 hours, with stops on the islands of Korcula and Mljet. Visit the island in spring or autumn and you will not regret your decision. Additional information is available on the website of the Nature Park Lastovo Archipelago.
