Kod Jakše Biševo – Fish and Lunch at Porat Beach
Kod Jakše is a small family-run restaurant located right next to the sandy Porat beach on Biševo. The tables are shaded, just a few steps from the sea, and the view over one of the most beautiful bays on the island creates the atmosphere of a true island beach restaurant – without city crowds, traffic, and formalities.
It makes the most sense to visit after swimming at Porat or after touring the Blue Cave. Instead of a quick return to Komiža, one can stay for lunch here, go back into the sea, and turn Biševo into a full-day excursion.
What to Eat at Kod Jakše?
The cuisine is Mediterranean and Dalmatian, with an emphasis on fish, tuna, squid, and other seafood.
Particularly notable is the grilled tuna, which is one of the dishes for which Kod Jakše is known. The menu also features squid, fish, shrimp, octopus, and various simple grilled dishes.
It is worth asking what is available that day, as this small seasonal restaurant on Biševo operates best when choosing from the actual daily offerings rather than a pre-conceived extensive menu.
In addition to fish and seafood, there are also meat and simpler dishes, making the restaurant suitable for groups where not everyone wants to eat fish.
Tuna is One of the Best Reasons to Visit
If you enjoy tuna, Kod Jakše is particularly interesting.
Tuna steak from the grill has been one of the restaurant's most recognizable dishes for years, and it is a logical choice here – simply grilled fish, a light side dish, and lunch just a few meters from the sea.
Do not expect complicated modern gastronomy. The style is much closer to a good island lunch after swimming: quality main ingredients, simple preparation, and a relaxed atmosphere.
In the recent menu, more interesting dishes like octopus stew have appeared, so it is advisable to ask if there is something being prepared that day.
Tables Practically on the Beach
The biggest feature of the restaurant is not just the food but the location in the Porat bay.
The terrace is right next to the sandy beach, under simple natural shading that provides necessary coolness during the day. A seat, a wooden table, the sea, and anchored boats create almost the entire scenery.
There is no road between the restaurant and the beach, nor cars passing by the tables.
For this reason, Kod Jakše works best as part of a day spent on Biševo. You can arrive in swimwear after swimming, sit down for lunch, and a few minutes later be back on the beach.
View of Porat
Porat is a wide sandy bay on the western side of Biševo, and the restaurant looks directly towards its open part.
During the day, small boats, speedboats, and sailboats often stand in front of the beach, while the water near the shore is very shallow and turquoise due to the light sandy bottom.
In July and August, it can be quite lively around midday as day-trippers arrive in Porat.
Later in the afternoon, the situation changes. Excursion boats begin to leave, the beach empties, and the entire bay takes on a much calmer character.
If the return schedule allows, late lunch or early dinner can be particularly pleasant.
How to Get to Kod Jakše?
The restaurant cannot be reached by car.
Biševo does not have the tourist road traffic that exists on Vis, so Porat is primarily accessed by boat.
The easiest way is to start from Komiža, which is the main departure point for Biševo.
You can reach Porat by regular boat line, taxi boat, private boat, or as part of an organized excursion.
Upon arrival in Porat, the restaurant is practically right by the beach, and there is no serious walking to get to it.
Kod Jakše After the Blue Cave
One of the best combinations for a trip to Biševo is the Blue Cave in the morning, followed by Porat and lunch at Kod Jakše.
The Blue Cave is visited via Mezuporat, and the visit itself is relatively short. Instead of immediately boarding a boat back to Komiža, you can continue towards the western side of Biševo.
Porat is good for a few hours of swimming as it has fine sand, a long shallow sea, and natural shade, while Kod Jakše solves the lunch issue without the need to carry food for the entire day.
This way, Biševo is experienced as an island, not just as a place where the Blue Cave is located.
Arriving by Your Own Boat
Kod Jakše is a natural choice for boaters.
Porat is a well-known anchorage, and during the summer, you can regularly see sailboats and motorboats in front of the beach.
However, it should be noted that the water towards the inner part of the bay is very shallow. Larger vessels must remain far enough from the sandy shore.
Porat is also not a marina with fully protected berths, so it is advisable to check the forecast before a longer stay. The bay is particularly sensitive to winds and waves from the southwest.
For lunch on a calm summer day, arriving by boat is very practical, and this method of visiting is one of the reasons why Kod Jakše has the character of a true island restaurant.
Can You Walk There?
Yes.
Porat is connected by old island paths to Salbunara, Poje, and other parts of Biševo.
If spending the whole day on Biševo, one can, for example, walk from Salbunara to Porat, swim, and finish the tour with lunch at Kod Jakše.
This walk during July and August is better planned outside the hottest part of the day, as some parts of Biševo are completely exposed to the sun.
Should You Make a Reservation?
During the main season, making a reservation is a good idea, especially for larger groups or if you want to have lunch at the time when a larger number of excursion boats arrive in Porat.
The restaurant is small, and the number of guests on Biševo can change very quickly during the day.
If arriving by your own boat or on a private excursion, it is even more practical to arrange lunch in advance and adjust your arrival.
Outside the main summer season, it is also advisable to check the operation before departure, as Kod Jakše is a highly seasonal island establishment.
Kod Jakše or Konoba Tomić?
There are several dining options in Porat, so it is useful to know that Kod Jakše and Konoba Tomić are not the same establishment.
Both are directly connected to the beach and the island rhythm of Porat, but Kod Jakše has particularly established itself as a relaxed beach restaurant with an emphasis on tuna, fish, squid, and seafood.
There is no need to decide in advance based on a large menu. On a small island like Biševo, it is often a better strategy to see what is offered that day and choose what looks best.
Is Kod Jakše Suitable for Families?
Yes, especially due to its location.
Porat beach is one of the better sandy beaches in the Vis area for children as the entry into the sea is gentle, and the shallow area is very long.
The restaurant is located right by the beach, so there is no need to take children by car or walk a long distance to lunch after swimming.
This simplicity makes Porat and Kod Jakše a very good combination for a family outing to Biševo.
When is the Best Time to Visit?
For lunch after the Blue Cave, the most practical time is late morning or early afternoon.
At that time, Porat is the liveliest, but the entire day can also be organized without rushing about the last boat connections.
If there is a possibility of a later return, the afternoon is even more pleasant. After most day-trippers leave, the beach and restaurant take on a completely different rhythm.
For a particularly peaceful experience of Biševo, the best months are June and September, when the sea is still pleasant, and Porat is not under pressure from the largest number of day trips.
One of the Best Ways to Slow Down on Biševo
Kod Jakše should not be viewed as a restaurant that one visits to Biševo solely for lunch.
Its value lies in the entire combination: boat from Komiža, Blue Cave, sandy Porat, swimming, and a table just a few steps from the sea.
After a few hours of excursions, such a simple lunch often suits Biševo better than a formal restaurant experience.
Tuna or squid from the grill, shade above the terrace, and a view of the turquoise waters of Porat explain well why it is worth staying a little longer here.
If Biševo is visited as a full-day trip, Kod Jakše is one of the natural choices for lunch by Porat beach.
