Split, in terms of its sporting activity and the results achieved by its athletes, is, in particular, the number of Olympic Games participants, as well as the number of Olympic medalists, a metropolis of Croatian sport.Specifically, Split's athletes represent approximately one third of all Croatian participants in the Olympic Games, ie Olympic medalists, with numerous world, European and regional medalists. Split has hosted many major sporting events from world, European and regional championships to the Women's Chess Olympiad. Undoubtedly, this special place is occupied by VIII. 1979 Mediterranean Games, which represent a turning point in Split sport, both in its excellent organization and size, as well as in the built sports facilities that remained for use by Split athletes. Behind this magnificent sporting event, there is also a wealth of documentation called the MIS Collection.The aforementioned lush sports activity, which has been rooted since the end of the 19th century. In the 19th century, when sports associations were founded in Split, it gave a rich sporting legacy, which led to the idea of establishing a Museum of Sport.Of the numerous ideas and inscriptions, the inscription of Zdravko Reic published in Slobodna Dalmacija, September 11, 1968, which outlines the idea of the famous and respected sports historian Dusko Marovic, on the establishment of the Sports Museum in Split, is also cited. January 1982, proposing the establishment of Museum VIII. of the Mediterranean Games, as well as a letter from Antun - Ton Petrić dated November 11, 1986, addressed to the bodies of the Association for Physical Culture of the Municipality of Split, on the opening of the Museum of Sport - Split.
