One third of the area of the island of Mljet was declared a national park in 1960. It covers almost 5400 hectares, including sea area 500 m from the coast, islands and reefs. Salt lakes, Malo and Veliko jezero are the most prominent locations of the area and an important geological and oceanographic phenomenon. The whole area of the Park is extremely rich in plant and animal species. Mljet National Park will not disappoint fans of cultural heritage, who can reveal its numerous archaeological sites and ancient island village. The most visited attraction though is the Benedictine Monastery, located on the island of Sveta Marija on the lake Veliko jezero. The Park attracts people of different interests, who can enjoy in discovering its beaches and sea caves, as well as in activities such as the traditional international triathlon race Mljet Half Ironman. In this national park there are hiking and biking trails. It is also possible to rent canoes, kayaks and bicycles, dive, and near the hotel you can rent bicycles, cars, motorbikes and surfboards. There are ideal running routes around lakes Veliko and Malo jezero. In the Park there are pebbly, concrete and rocky beaches, while the most suitable one for children is located near Mali most. A visit to the National Park Mljet is particular and unique experience for all those who love nature, culture, old customs and Mediterranean air. The island of Mljet can be easily reached by catamaran from Dubrovnik, and by ferry from Prapratno (peninsula of Peljesac) to Sobra. There are many possiblities for visiting the National Park Mljet: by ferry from Dubrovnik and the peninsula of Peljesac or by excursion boats departing from the islands of Korcula and Hvar, and the town of Split. In the period from January 1st to June 14th, and from September 16th to December 31st, tickets for adults cost around 9 euros, for seniors, children from 7 to 18 years of age and students around 4 euros, and for children younger than 7 years of age, the entrance is free. As for the summer season, from June 15th to September 15th, tickets for adults cost around 10 euros, for retired people, children from 7 to 18 years of age and students about 5 euros, and for children under 7 years of age, the entrance remains free. The Mljet National Park is open to visitors every day from 8 to 20h.
