The National Square in Zadar was formed in the Middle Ages as Platea magna (large square), the center of secular life in Zadar and the center of city administration with the City Lodge (13th century - 1565), the City Guard (1562) and the modern City Hall ( 1934). The name Platea Magna was replaced by the name Piazza dei Signori, and after II. World War the name Narodni trg became used. The town square is dominated by the City Hall, built on the site of an old and unsightly town hall that was torn down during the Italian rule over Zadar and erected in 1934.
