The Roman Forum in Zadar is the largest Roman forum on the eastern side of the Adriatic Sea. It was the main square where the public life of the city took place, and its construction began in the 1st century BC. It was founded by the first Roman emperor Augustus, as evidenced by two inscriptions in stone dating from the 3rd century when the construction of the forum was completed. The forum is 90 x 45 meters in size. It was enclosed by porches with galleries upstairs. Under the porch were shops and craft shops. Today, only the stairs, sidewalk and two monumental columns are preserved, one of which is in its original location. In the Middle Ages, the pillar served as a pillar of shame, as indicated by the chains nailed to it. At the site of the former capitol, the remains of an altar bed were found and sacrifices were made at the ceremony. This place is still the starting point of the planimetry of the city of Zadar. Later, on the foundations of the forum, the church of St. The Archbishop's Palace was built.
