Monastery of St. Klare is located south of the Gate from Pile to the city walls of Dubrovnik on Paska Milicevic's Poljana. It is the most famous of the 8 women's monasteries in Dubrovnik. The monastery was built in the late 13th and early 14th century. Because of its reputation, it was one of the most important women's monasteries in the Republic of Dubrovnik. An orphanage for abandoned children was opened in part of the monastery in 1432. They cared for the children until they were six years of age and were subsequently adopted by good families. Orphanage in the monastery of st. Clare was one of the first such establishments in the world. In the catastrophic earthquake of 1667, the monastery was badly damaged. It has been restored by city authorities.
