In 1222 the Church of St. James and the Benedictine monastery on Visnjica were erected. In the mid-16th century, the Romanesque church and monastery underwent profound changes in the transitional Gothic-Renaissance style. During the Baroque, a portal and windows were added to the western facade. During the Republic, Dubrovnik monks were staying in the monastery before taking the annual tribute to pay peace to the port of Constantinople. At the beginning of XIX. century, after the fall of the republic, the monastery was abolished, while the church is still open.
