Donji Humac is situated in the interior of Brač Island, between Supetar and Nerežišće, at an elevation of approximately 350 meters above sea level. The village is about 10 kilometers from Supetar and a few kilometers from the main island road that connects the northern and southern sides of Brač. Unlike the coastal towns on Brač, Donji Humac does not have a waterfront or beaches, but rather features the typical appearance of an old Brač village with stone houses, narrow streets, olive groves, and large stone courtyards.
The village is known for its long tradition of stone masonry and the processing of Brač stone. Numerous quarries in the vicinity of Donji Humac have been extracting stone for the construction of houses, churches, and palaces throughout Dalmatia and beyond for centuries. The stone from this part of Brač has been used in many well-known buildings, and stone processing remains an important part of the local identity.
Donji Humac is one of the older settlements on the island, with traces of life in this area dating back to ancient times. Nearby, there are remains of early Christian buildings and ancient sites, while the current appearance of the village mainly originates from the period between the 17th and 19th centuries. A large portion of the houses is built from Brač stone, featuring characteristic courtyards, water cisterns, and stone roofs.
The center of the village is marked by the Church of St. Fabian and Sebastian, which has a stone bell tower. Surrounding the church are smaller stone streets and squares that effectively illustrate how old Brač villages looked before the development of tourism. Donji Humac has little traffic and a small population, allowing the village to maintain a fairly authentic appearance throughout the year.
One of the more notable attractions near the village is the Kopačina Cave, an important archaeological site where remains of prehistoric life on Brač have been discovered. Adjacent to the cave is the well-known Konoba Kopačina, one of the most popular places on the island for lamb on a spit and traditional Brač dishes.
During the summer, several smaller local festivals and events take place in Donji Humac. The most famous is the celebration of the feast of St. Fabian and Sebastian, the village's patron saints, which includes a mass, procession, and evening gatherings with music and local food. Occasionally, smaller fishing evenings, concerts, and events related to local associations and the tradition of stone masonry are also held in the summer.
Donji Humac is often visited by people who wish to see the interior of Brač and places that are not solely focused on beaches and the coast. Due to its location in the central part of the island, the village serves as a good starting point for exploring various parts of Brač by car or bicycle.
Parking is available along the main streets and smaller squares in the village, and due to the low traffic, it is generally not a problem to find a parking space.
