Wilson's Beach Bar in Gromin Dolac – a hidden beach bar by one of Hvar's quietest beaches

Wilson's Beach Bar is situated right next to the main beach of Gromin Dolac, in an isolated part of Hvar's southern coast, a few kilometres east of Zavala. It is part of a small eco village called Cast Away and is quite different from the typical Hvar beach clubs – there are no large terraces, loud parties, or hotel complexes, just a few seating areas, sun loungers, and hammocks nestled between the sea and Mediterranean nature.

Access involves a few kilometres of unpaved road, so it is rare for casual passers-by to end up here. Most visitors come specifically for the beach, tranquility, and a few hours spent by the sea.

Wilson's is primarily a place for refreshing drinks, cocktails, and relaxation after swimming, rather than a restaurant for a full lunch.

Beach bar right on Gromin Dolac beach

The bar is located just above the pebbly beach.

It takes only a few steps from the sea to the drinks, allowing for easy transitions between swimming, resting in a hammock, and sitting at the bar.

The view is completely open towards the Šćedro Channel, and there is no significant development around the beach. In the background, there are rocky slopes, agaves, and greenery, while behind the bar, Cast Away continues with its simple wooden houses.

The whole place feels more like a small hideaway by the sea than a developed tourist facility.

Cocktails, beer, wine, and cold drinks

The offerings are tailored for a day at the beach.

You can order cocktails, non-alcoholic cocktails, beer, wine, and organic and other refreshing drinks.

Cocktails are one of the main reasons to visit, especially later in the afternoon when the sun is less intense, and most guests linger by the bar after swimming.

The atmosphere is relaxed, without the formal service expected in a restaurant.

Food is limited to snacks

Wilson's is not a restaurant.

The menu includes simple snacks and healthier nibbles, so don’t count on the bar for a proper lunch.

If you plan to spend the whole day in Gromin Dolac, it’s advisable to bring some food with you, especially as the nearest larger selection of restaurants and shops is several kilometres away in Zavala.

This simplicity aligns with the overall concept of the place – people come here for the sea and nature, and the bar serves as a pleasant addition to a day at the beach.

Hammocks and sun loungers

The area around Wilson's is designed for long and very relaxed stays.

There are hammocks, sun loungers, and lounge space available, so after swimming, you don’t have to remain on a towel on the pebbly beach the whole time.

This is particularly pleasant during the hottest part of the day when there is little natural shade on the beach itself.

Combined with a cold drink and a view of the sea, the hammocks are one of the details that best describe the atmosphere at Wilson's.

Kayaks, SUP, and other activities

If swimming alone isn’t enough, you can rent equipment for exploring the surrounding coastline at Cast Away.

Available are kayaks, SUP boards, windsurfing boards, and mountain bikes.

The kayak is particularly interesting as there are a series of small coves to the east and west of Gromin Dolac that are much easier to access from the sea than by land.

In calm weather, this is one of the nicer ways to get to know the completely natural part of Hvar's southern coast.

Snorkelling

The water in front of the bar is very clear, and the rocky edges of the beach are good for exploring the underwater world.

Equipment for snorkelling is available on-site, so it’s not necessary to bring your own if you just want to briefly explore the cove.

Along the edges, there are stones, rocks, and crevices, while visibility on calm days is very good.

Water shoes are also useful as there are uneven stones and sea urchins along the rocky parts.

An atmosphere without the typical beach club

The greatest advantage of Wilson's is precisely what it lacks.

There are no large crowds, rows of sun loungers, loud music, or the feeling of being in a commercial beach club.

The music is unobtrusive, people linger in hammocks or by the sea, and many spend the entire afternoon here.

Due to its distance from Zavala and several kilometres of unpaved road, Wilson's naturally attracts guests who don’t mind a slightly more challenging journey in exchange for a quieter beach.

How to reach Wilson's Beach Bar?

From Zavala, take the unsealed road towards Gromin Dolac.

It is approximately 4 kilometres from the start of the unpaved road to the bar. After about 3.5 kilometres, you pass through the small settlement of Gromin Dolac, and then continue for another half a kilometre east.

There are no large tourist signs along the road, so it’s easiest to follow navigation to Wilson's Beach Bar or Cast Away.

The road is passable by a regular car, but you should drive slowly. It is narrow, uneven in places, and it’s not always easy to pass vehicles coming from the opposite direction.

It takes about ten minutes of slower driving to get from Zavala to the area of the bar.

Parking

You can drive to the final approach near Cast Away, above the beach, and then walk the last short distance down to Wilson's.

The space along the approach is limited and does not resemble a large organised car park. During the main season, it’s more practical to arrive early, especially if you want to spend a larger part of the day at the beach.

The private parking at Cast Away is primarily intended for their guests, so day visitors should park in a way that does not obstruct access to the property and passage for other vehicles.

Arriving without a car

Cast Away also organises shuttle transport from the Stari Grad ferry port, with the option of arranged pick-up in Jelsa.

This is a useful alternative if you prefer not to drive several kilometres along an unpaved road or do not have a car on Hvar.

For a day trip, transport should be arranged in advance.

The best part of the day

Wilson's is lovely throughout the day, but it works particularly well in the late afternoon.

The sun is no longer so strong, the sea is still warm, and after swimming, you can stay for a cocktail or beer while the light over the Šćedro Channel changes.

Due to its isolated location, there is not much artificial lighting or city noise here after sunset, which further enhances the feeling of distance from touristy Hvar.

Who is Wilson's best suited for?

Wilson's will appeal most to those who want a small beach bar in nature, rather than a well-equipped club with extensive food and entertainment offerings.

It’s worth visiting for the combination of a quiet beach, clear sea, cocktails, hammocks, and the opportunity to explore the coastline by kayak or SUP.

The unpaved access requires a bit more time and attention, but it is precisely because of this that Gromin Dolac retains an atmosphere that is increasingly hard to find in the more developed parts of Hvar.
