Bile Stine Beach in Komiža
Bile Stine Beach is located on the northwest side of the Komiža bay, behind Gusarica and Drugo Ploča beaches. The name may suggest a larger, developed beach, but Bile Stine is actually a peaceful stretch of natural rocky coastline with several smaller pebbly spots suitable for entering the sea and staying by the shore.
This location is chosen when one wants to escape the crowds of urban beaches while remaining relatively close to the center of Komiža. The shore offers a nice view of the town, the harbor, and the houses descending towards the sea, providing a different perspective of the entire Komiža bay.
How to Reach Bile Stine Beach
From the center of Komiža, walk towards the northern side of the bay, in the direction of Gusarica. After passing Gusarica beach, continue towards Drugo Ploča bathing area, with the final part leading along a narrow natural path by the coast. The walk from the waterfront in the center of Komiža takes approximately 15 to 20 minutes, depending on the starting point and pace.
The final approach is not a developed promenade. The path is occasionally narrow, rocky, and uneven, so sturdy sandals or sports shoes are a better choice than regular flip-flops. In some parts, it is possible to reach the coastline through shallow water at low tide, but this should not be relied upon as the rocks can be wet and slippery.
It is not possible to drive directly to the beach, and there is no parking near Bile Stine. Vehicles should be left in permitted areas in Komiža or at one of the public parking lots, such as Rogač or Norpine, and the rest of the way should be completed on foot. For guests staying in Komiža, a car is not necessary to reach this beach.
Rocky Coast and Small Pebbly Areas
The majority of the coastline consists of light-colored rocks and stone slabs, interspersed with smaller pockets of pebbles. There is limited space for comfortable lounging, so Bile Stine is not a good choice for large groups or visitors looking for a wide beach to spend the entire day.
Entry into the sea is easiest at the pebbly sections, while entry from the rocks requires more caution. The seabed near the shore can be uneven and slippery, making water shoes useful. The underwater terrain alternates between rocky bottoms and seagrass meadows, making this an interesting spot for snorkeling and observing marine life.
There is no large and reliable area of natural shade on the shore. Shade can be found in certain overgrown parts of the coast, depending on the time of day, but for longer stays, sun protection should be brought.
Quieter Swimming Without Tourist Facilities
There are no tourist facilities at this location. There are no bars, showers, restrooms, rental sunbeds, or options to purchase water and food. All necessary items should be brought from Komiža, and waste should be taken away after the visit.
The nearest dining establishments and additional facilities are located in the Gusarica area and further towards the town center. The absence of facilities and the somewhat challenging final approach are reasons why Bile Stine usually has fewer visitors than more accessible beaches in Komiža.
The beach is most suitable for couples, solo visitors, and confident swimmers seeking a quiet bathing spot in a natural setting. It is not among the most practical choices for small children due to the narrow path, limited space, rocky coastline, and lack of facilities. It is also not suitable for strollers, wheelchair users, or individuals with mobility difficulties on uneven terrain.
Best Time to Visit
During the summer, it is best to arrive in the morning when it is not too hot, making the walk to the beach more pleasant. Later in the afternoon, the shore is quieter, and the view towards Komiža is particularly appealing, but enough daylight should be left for the return along the narrow path.
When the sea is rough, access to the pebbly areas and entry from the rocks can be uncomfortable, so Bile Stine is best visited in calm weather. The location is accessible year-round, but swimming and longer stays are most enjoyable when planned from late spring to early autumn.
Bile Stine is not a typical Komiža beach with developed shores and facilities. Its value lies in the small pebbly areas, natural rocks, interesting underwater scenery, and the view towards Komiža, close enough to the town but away from its largest summer crowds.
