Caffe Bar Škor in Komiža
Caffe Bar Škor is situated in Škor, a small square hidden among the stone houses of old Komiža, just a few minutes' walk from the waterfront. The sea is not visible from here as it is from the cafés by the harbor, but this location is what gives Škor a different atmosphere. Instead of tables along the tourist promenade, guests sit among old houses in one of the most pleasant corners of the old town.
During the day, Škor is a good place for coffee and a break from the sun, while in the evening it becomes a livelier bar where cocktails play a much more significant role. It is not a place for lunch or a typical café where one just stops for an espresso. It makes the most sense when one wants to get away from the waterfront, sit outdoors, and linger over a drink.
Škor is Part of the Experience
At this bar, the location is almost as important as what is ordered. Škor Square is small, enclosed by old stone facades and connected by narrow passages leading from the center of Komiža to the older part of the town.
During the day, the stone houses provide some shade, making it more comfortable here than on the completely open waterfront when the sun is strong. In the evening, the square takes on a completely different character – tables fill up, the lighting among the houses creates a warmer atmosphere, and there is no constant flow of people as along the main promenade.
For this reason, it is a good idea to come here after dinner. It takes just a few minutes to walk from the restaurants on the waterfront to Škor, and the change in atmosphere is felt almost immediately.
Cocktails are an Important Part of the Offer
In recent seasons, Škor has increasingly emphasized cocktails. Alongside classics like Aperol Spritz and other well-known summer drinks, more serious mixed combinations are also prepared, so this is not just a place for beer or gemišt.
If visiting in the evening, a cocktail here makes more sense than another coffee. For someone who enjoys the classics, a spritz or gin and tonic can be ordered, while it is best to ask what special or seasonal combination they are currently offering.
Unlike more modern bars right on the waterfront, a significant part of the experience here is enjoying a cocktail in the old Komiža square, just a few dozen meters from the sea, but completely away from the harbor crowds.
In the Morning, It’s a Different Story
In the morning, Škor is much quieter. This is a good time for an espresso or a longer coffee before heading to the beach, harbor, or on an island excursion.
Those staying in the old part of Komiža can quickly discover that it is sometimes more pleasant to come to Škor for the first coffee than to descend to the busiest part of the waterfront. There is no need for special planning – one can sit briefly, have a coffee, and continue on.
Later in the day, the number of guests coming for a cold drink increases, and the true bar character of the place only emerges in the evening.
Beer, Wine, and Simple Drinks Also Make Sense
It is not necessary to order a cocktail. Škor is still a café bar where it makes perfect sense to sit down for a beer, wine, gemišt, or a strong drink.
This is especially a good choice for a group where some want a cocktail while others prefer a cold beer. The atmosphere is relaxed, and there is no need to come particularly dressed up or plan the entire evening around going out.
In Komiža, such places are welcome as it is easy to make an evening loop: dinner on the waterfront, a short walk through the old streets, drinks at Škor, and then continuing to the harbor or one of the other bars.
Do Not Expect Food Here
Škor should primarily be viewed as a bar and drinking spot, not as a restaurant. There are plenty of other options nearby for breakfast, lunch, or dinner, so it is not a problem to eat something first and then move a few steps away to Škor.
This is actually a better combination than trying to spend the entire evening in one place. The square is especially pleasant for finishing dinner with a drink, when there is no longer a need to look at the menu or search for a table by the sea.
Škor or a Café on the Waterfront?
It depends on what you are looking for. For a view of boats, the sun, and constant happenings, the better spots are right by the sea. For a more intimate space among old houses, Škor is more interesting.
One does not come here to photograph the sunset over Komiža Bay. People come for the atmosphere of the square, conversation, and drinks in a space that in the evening feels almost like a small open living room of old Komiža.
It is particularly suitable for couples and smaller groups. A large group looking for a louder night out may continue elsewhere later, but for the first or last drink of the evening, Škor is a very good choice.
How to Get There
From the main Komiža waterfront, one just needs to turn among the old houses towards Škor. The walk takes a few minutes, and there is no reason to come by car.
Guests arriving from another part of the island are best off leaving their vehicle in a public parking area and exploring the rest of the center of Komiža on foot. The streets around Škor are narrow and not a place to look for parking.
This is one of the advantages of the location – it is close enough to the waterfront to be easily found, but a few dozen meters inland completely changes the atmosphere.
When is the Best Time to Visit
For coffee – in the morning. For a cold drink and a short break – late afternoon. For the full Škor experience – in the evening.
In summer, it is particularly pleasant when the daytime heat subsides and the tables in the square come to life. This is when the reasons for this bar's distinction from most places on the Komiža waterfront become most apparent.
Caffe Bar Škor is not a place to choose for a large menu or a view of the sea. It is worth visiting precisely for the opposite – a small stone square, old Komiža, and good evening drinks just a few steps away from the main crowds.
