Church of the Purification of the Blessed Virgin Mary in Srednje Selo
The parish church of the Purification of the Blessed Virgin Mary is located in the center of Srednje Selo on the island of Šolta. Locals also refer to it as Our Lady of Candlemas and Our Lady of Kandelora, named after the feast celebrated on February 2. The stone façade, public clock, and bell tower make it the most recognizable building in this small settlement between Grohote and Donje Selo.
The current church was built in 1882 during the tenure of parish priest Don Nikola Šimić. It was constructed from well-cut stone on the site of an older and significantly smaller parish church, providing Srednje Selo with a sacred building suitable for its population and the importance of an independent parish.
The church is approximately 21 meters long and 7.5 meters wide. The simple stone façade features an arched entrance with a profiled stone frame. Above the door is a large round window, and even higher is the public clock that has served the entire village for decades.
At the top of the façade rises a stone bell tower with openings for three bells. Unlike churches with separate tall bell towers, here the bells are part of the façade, giving the building a harmonious and recognizable appearance.
The side walls of the church nave are divided by tall arched windows. These allow sufficient natural light to enter the interior while emphasizing the elongated shape of the building from the outside. The church is surrounded by a stone wall, and tall cypress trees further highlight its position within the rural core of Srednje Selo.
Inside, there are three marble altars crafted by the Split stonemason Pavle Bilinić. The main altar is located in the sanctuary and features an altar painting depicting the Presentation of Jesus in the Temple, created by the painter A. Zuccaro.
The Presentation of Jesus in the Temple is directly related to the church's patron. According to Christian tradition, Mary and Joseph brought Jesus to the Jerusalem temple forty days after his birth. The feast is celebrated on February 2 and is popularly known as Candlemas or Kandelora due to the custom of blessing candles.
One side altar features a depiction of the Virgin Mary transferred from the old church. The other is dedicated to the Holy Cross and is adorned with a marble crucifix. The sanctuary was paved with marble slabs in 1895.
The church also houses wooden statues of the Virgin Mary, St. Joseph, and St. Blaise, made in Tyrolean workshops in the early 20th century. There are also older altar paintings of St. George and St. Christopher, which were once located in the previous parish church. The painting of St. Christopher was created in 1812 by Don Alojzije Macanović, the then parish priest in Grohote.
A particularly valuable remnant of the old church is a chalice engraved with the year 1564. This item confirms that the sacred tradition at this site has existed long before the current 19th-century building.
The old church was approximately 11 meters long and 4.5 meters wide. It was already mentioned in 1579 with two altars, while a third was added during the 17th century. After its demolition, some artworks and church inventory were transferred to the new church.
The parish of Srednje Selo became independent in 1726. Although it was administratively connected to the parish of St. Stephen in Grohote during the 19th century, it maintained its own religious community and worship. Therefore, the current church is not only an architectural landmark but also the center of centuries-old parish life in the area.
The church is still active, and masses are regularly held. There is no standard tourist visiting hours, so the best opportunity to enter is just before or after services. The current schedule should be checked before arrival as mass times change between summer and winter.
During mass, it is not appropriate to tour the church as a tourist site. Visitors should speak quietly, dress appropriately for a sacred space, and check for any specific restrictions before photographing the interior.
The church is easily accessible via the main road connecting Grohote, Srednje Selo, and Donje Selo. It is about one and a half kilometers from the center of Grohote, making the drive only a few minutes. It can also be reached by bus, bicycle, or on foot, but during the summer heat, it is advisable to consider the limited shade along the road.
The church is located along a local road within the old part of the village. There is no large designated tourist parking area immediately next to it, but vehicles can be parked in permitted expansions or other suitable locations nearby. Care should be taken not to block entrances to private yards or narrow the passage for local vehicles.
The surrounding streets and approaches are occasionally narrow, and the stone surface may be uneven. Access to the church space may be possible for individuals with reduced mobility, but it is advisable to check for thresholds or steps at the chosen entrance before visiting.
A visit to the church is best combined with a walk around Srednje Selo. In the vicinity, one can see old stone houses, closed courtyards, external staircases, and other examples of traditional Šoltan architecture. Since the village does not have a large number of typical tourist facilities, the visit is usually peaceful and often without crowds.
The Church of the Purification of the Blessed Virgin Mary is not a monumental island cathedral, but it is the most important landmark of Srednje Selo. It is worth visiting for its harmonious stone façade, bell tower with three bells, valuable altars and artworks, and the continuity of sacred life that has persisted at this site for centuries.
