Fish Restaurant Veprinova – Seaside Fish Restaurant in Veprinova Bay
Fish Restaurant Veprinova is located right by the sea in the eponymous bay on the southern coast of Hvar, beneath Gdinj. It is a small family-run restaurant that perfectly fits the character of this part of the island: a few tables by the water, a view across the entire bay, and a menu that primarily focuses on fish, seafood, and simple Dalmatian cuisine.
Visitors do not stumble upon the restaurant by chance while walking along the town promenade. To reach Veprinova from Gdinj, one descends via a local road, with the final stretch being unpaved. This location often allows a visit to the restaurant to be combined with a full day of swimming at Veprinova beach or arriving by boat.
The ambience is unpretentious and very local. The sea is just a few metres from the tables, surrounded by pine trees and a few houses, with no urban noise, traffic, or typical tourist promenades.
Fish and Seafood at the Heart of the Offer
The main reason for visiting is the fish.
The menu features grilled fish, squid, octopus, shellfish, and other seafood dishes, accompanied by sides such as vegetables, salads, and potatoes.
The fish selection naturally depends on what is available that day, so it is advisable to ask what is fresh before ordering at such a restaurant.
Particularly well-suited to the character of Veprinova is the whole fish grilled over an open flame – simply prepared, without overly complicated additions, served with olive oil and a seasonal side.
For a guest coming specifically for Dalmatian fish, this is the most logical choice.
Squid, Octopus, and Seafood Dishes
In addition to fish, grilled calamari, octopus, and other seafood dishes are frequently chosen.
The kitchen is not designed as contemporary fine dining nor as a large restaurant with hundreds of different dishes. Veprinova functions better with a shorter selection of simple dishes that suit the location.
Homemade pasta with seafood ingredients is also available, which is a good option for guests wanting something between classic grilled fish and a lighter lunch after swimming.
Meat Dishes Also Available
Although the name Fish Restaurant clearly indicates where the emphasis lies, the restaurant is not exclusively for guests who eat fish.
There are also grilled meat dishes on offer, including steak and simpler meat combinations.
This is practical for families or larger groups where not everyone wants seafood.
However, if one chooses Veprinova precisely for its location and character, fish and seafood remain its standout offerings.
Peka Must Be Arranged in Advance
Among the dishes that are occasionally prepared is peka, which includes octopus or other variations by arrangement.
Peka is not a dish that can be prepared in a few minutes after ordering, so it is best to arrange it in advance.
This is especially true during the peak season when the small restaurant has a limited number of tables and the kitchen operates for guests who have already reserved.
If one desires peka, it is not wise to rely on its availability without prior notice.
Homemade Pasta and Simple Sides
Alongside seafood dishes, homemade pasta is served, while simple Mediterranean sides are generally offered with fish and meat.
Grilled vegetables, salads, potatoes, and olive oil fit this type of restaurant much more naturally than heavy sauces and complicated presentations.
Veprinova is at its best when it remains simple: good ingredients, grilling, olive oil, and a table just a few metres from the sea.
Olive Oil as an Important Part of the Meal
Olive oil plays a significant role in the dishes and fits well with the agricultural tradition of eastern Hvar.
In this part of the island, olives, vines, and gardens have been part of daily life for centuries, so grilled fish with good oil is not merely a tourist interpretation of Dalmatian cuisine but a completely natural combination for this area.
With fish and vegetables, it is the simple ingredients that shine the most.
Terrace Almost on the Beach
The greatest feature of Fish Restaurant Veprinova is undoubtedly its location.
The terrace is situated a few steps from the sea, with an open view across the entire bay. During lunch, the atmosphere is connected to the beach – guests arrive after swimming, boats occasionally anchor in the bay, and there is no urban traffic around the tables.
In the evening, the bay becomes even more tranquil, and the restaurant takes on a much more intimate character.
This is one of those places where the location is not just a beautiful backdrop but an essential part of the entire experience.
Swimming and Lunch
If arriving in Veprinova by car, the most practical approach is to combine the restaurant visit with a day at the beach of the same name.
Veprinova beach is right next to the restaurant and consists of small pebbles and stones, with clear water and natural shade in parts of the shore.
Therefore, there is no need to descend the unpaved road just for a short lunch and then leave immediately.
It is much more pleasant to arrive early, spend a few hours at the beach, and then sit down for a meal.
Arriving by Car
The restaurant is accessed from Gdinj towards the southern coast.
The distance from the village to the bay is approximately six kilometres, with the last two kilometres being unpaved.
The road is passable for ordinary cars, but one should drive slowly due to uneven surfaces and narrower sections.
Extra caution is required with low vehicles, especially if the unpaved road is in poor condition after winter or rain.
This last part of the journey is one reason why Veprinova does not experience heavy passing traffic.
Parking is Limited
There is no large restaurant car park.
At the end of the road and in the immediate vicinity of the bay, there are a few parking spaces, but the area is limited and shared with beachgoers and accommodation guests.
During July and August, it is advisable to arrive early or to ask during reservation where it is most practical to leave the car.
Particular care should be taken not to block access to houses and the local road.
Arriving by Boat
Veprinova is also excellent for guests arriving by sea.
The bay serves as a natural anchorage, and in the central part, the seabed is predominantly sandy, with patches of seagrass. The restaurant is clearly visible from the shore.
This allows for a very straightforward day plan: anchoring in the bay, swimming, and lunch just a few metres from the sea.
There is no traditional restaurant pontoon or marina, so one should anchor responsibly and consider the weather conditions.
Considering the South Wind
Veprinova is open to the southern part of the sea.
In stable summer weather, the bay is very pleasant, but during stronger south winds, waves can develop, making arrival by boat considerably less enjoyable.
This is particularly important for sailors, as well as for guests planning a full day at the beach.
When the sea is calm, it is the open position to the south that provides a lovely view and a sense of complete separation from the rest of the island.
Reservation is Wise
Fish Restaurant Veprinova is not a large establishment, and the number of tables is limited.
Therefore, making a reservation is a good idea, especially for dinner, larger groups, or if coming specifically for the restaurant.
For special dishes like peka, prior arrangement is even more crucial.
A reservation is also practical because reaching the bay involves several kilometres of local and unpaved roads – it is better to know that a table is waiting than to descend without a plan during the busiest part of the season.
Is It Worth Visiting Just for the Restaurant?
If staying in Gdinj, Zastražišće, or the eastern part of Hvar and you enjoy fish, Veprinova can justify a separate trip.
However, the best way to experience it is not just to come, eat, and leave.
The bay and restaurant function as a whole. The beach, swimming, a few hours of tranquillity, and lunch or dinner by the sea give much more meaning to the journey than a quick visit.
Fish Restaurant Veprinova is not a place that attracts with luxurious interiors or an extensive menu. Its greatest value lies in simple seafood cuisine in a location where one arrives through a small Hvar village, a few kilometres of narrow road, and the last stretch of unpaved track, then eats almost on the beach.
