Pizzeria-Restaurant Zadruga in Komiža
Zadruga is situated on the waterfront in Komiža, but it is not just another seaside restaurant. Alongside pizza, pasta, and grilled dishes, you will find simpler homemade meals that are increasingly rare on tourist menus. This makes Zadruga a sensible choice when you want to sit by the waterfront and enjoy something closer to traditional Dalmatian fare rather than a modern restaurant menu.
The restaurant features tables facing the waterfront, as well as an indoor area that differs from the typical terrace by the sea. The name Zadruga is not coincidental; this part of Komiža has long been associated with the local agricultural cooperative and winemaking, giving the place a more local character than one might expect at first glance.
Fisherman's stew is worth seeking out first
If fisherman's stew is on offer that day, it is worth considering before automatically ordering pizza. This traditional Komiža dish is a hearty, thick stew that combines beans with flavours of the sea.
It is not a light starter but a proper meal, so you generally do not need to order many additional dishes alongside it. Such offerings highlight why Zadruga is not just another pizzeria on the waterfront.
As homemade cooked dishes may not be available every day, it is best to ask what has been prepared that day.
Daily specials are the interesting side of Zadruga
Alongside the standard menu, you might find stuffed peppers, goulash, tripe, veal, and other simple cooked dishes. This aspect of the menu sets Zadruga apart from a typical pizzeria.
If there is something cooked on the board or in the daily specials, it is worth checking before placing your order. At neighbouring tables, you might find some enjoying pizza while others have a plate of homemade cooked dish.
This kind of offering is particularly welcome after a few days on Vis. Grilled fish, squid, and seafood pasta can become repetitive, so a plate of stew, veal, or another homemade dish can be just what you need.
Pizza remains a safe choice
Nonetheless, Zadruga is still a pizzeria, and the selection of pizzas is an important part of the menu. It features more classic combinations, without attempts to emulate modern Neapolitan pizza with its very puffy crust and softer centre.
Pizza is a good choice for families, larger groups, or lunch when something simple and substantial is desired. Alongside pizza, pasta, salads, and other dishes are offered, so it is not an issue if everyone at the table wants something different.
If you are looking for modern Neapolitan pizza, there are more specialised options in Komiža. Zadruga is more suited for those wanting a classic pizza and a straightforward meal by the waterfront.
Meat and grill
The menu also includes simpler meat dishes and a grill selection. This makes the restaurant practical for a group where one person wants pizza, another a cooked dish, and a third something meaty.
Do not expect fine dining presentation. The idea is to provide a substantial plate, familiar flavours, and a wide enough selection to easily find something for the whole group.
This kind of menu is practical for children, as there is usually something familiar and simple among the pizza, pasta, and grilled options.
Table by the waterfront or indoors
In summer, most people first look for tables facing the sea. You can sit on the Komiža waterfront, with views of the harbour, boats, and old houses across the bay. It is particularly pleasant in the evening when the daytime heat subsides and the evening strolls through the town begin.
However, it is worth considering the indoor area of the restaurant as well. It is less exposed to the constant flow of people and can be more comfortable for a longer lunch or when it is particularly busy outside.
If there is no free table in the front row by the sea, it is not necessarily a reason to seek another restaurant.
Good for an informal lunch
Zadruga makes the most sense when you want to eat simply and without much preparation. After a day at the beach, returning by boat, or strolling through Komiža, you can sit down and choose between pizza, a daily special, pasta, or grilled dishes.
For a special dinner with several courses and more modern gastronomy, there are other places. Here, the advantage lies in not having to plan the entire evening around the restaurant.
A good question to ask before ordering is simply:
“What do you have cooked today?”
The answer to this question can often be more interesting than the standard menu.
For families and larger groups
Zadruga is practical when there are various preferences at the table. Children can have pizza or pasta, someone else can opt for grilled dishes, and another can choose a homemade cooked meal.
The location by the waterfront makes it easier to have dinner with children, as you can head straight to the promenade after the meal, with the rest of the town, ice cream shops, and shops just a few minutes away.
Pushchairs can easily be brought to the restaurant as there are no difficult access points.
Getting there and parking
If you are staying in Komiža, the best way to reach Zadruga is on foot. The restaurant is located right on the waterfront and can be reached from the centre in just a few minutes.
For guests coming from other parts of the island, it is more practical to leave the car at a public parking area and continue on foot to the waterfront. During the peak season, it is not advisable to try to find parking right next to the restaurant.
The location is also convenient for guests returning from a boat trip, as it is very quick to get from the harbour to the restaurant.
What is worth trying here
I would not choose Zadruga solely for the pizza. It is worth first checking if there is fisherman's stew or another daily cooked dish available.
If there is nothing that catches your attention that day, you can easily move on to pizza, pasta, or grilled dishes.
This is the greatest advantage of Zadruga. On the very touristy Komiža waterfront, you can still sit down and find a dish that resembles a homemade meal rather than a menu created solely for summer visitors.
