Konoba Momčin Dvor – traditional Šoltan cuisine in old Grohote
Konoba Momčin Dvor is located in Grohote, the largest settlement on Šolta, nestled among stone houses on Šoltan Victims Street, just a few minutes' walk from the main road, bus stop, and the town centre. It is not situated by the sea or on a tourist promenade, but rather in an authentic island setting where dining feels more like visiting a family courtyard than going to a conventional restaurant.
The main area of the konoba features an intimate stone courtyard with tables arranged close to an open hearth and grill. The decor is simple and rustic, adorned with traditional items, old tools, and details related to island life. The aromas of wood, fire, and food being prepared in front of guests are an essential part of the overall experience.
Momčin Dvor is best known for its grilled dishes and traditional meals cooked under the peka. The menu includes lamb, veal, various types of meat, fresh fish, squid, octopus, risottos, and other simple Dalmatian dishes. The offerings are not designed as a modern gastronomic menu with numerous small courses, but rather as hearty home cooking that emphasises quality ingredients and good preparation.
Lamb and veal hold a special place on the menu. The meat is served with potatoes, vegetables, or homemade gnocchi, and some dishes are prepared slowly, requiring more time. Dishes like veal or lamb cooked under the peka cannot be expected without prior notice, as they take several hours to prepare. It is best to arrange such meals at least a day in advance, along with an approximate arrival time and the number of guests.
In the seafood section, you can find grilled fish, octopus, fried or baked squid, and black risotto. The availability of fresh fish depends on the daily catch, so it is advisable to listen to the host's recommendations and check the type, weight, and price before ordering. Whole fish and certain cuts of meat can be charged by the kilogram, allowing guests to order a portion suitable for their party rather than a precise kilogram.
Alongside the main dishes, sides such as potatoes, vegetables, salads, and other simple accompaniments are served. Some of the vegetables and potatoes come from their own cultivation, which aligns well with the konoba's character and focus on local produce. The menu may change depending on the season and availability, so it makes more sense to ask what is best on the day rather than insisting on a specific dish in advance.
The konoba serves homemade wine, including Dobričić, an indigenous black variety from Šolta. The wine selection is not intended to be an extensive restaurant list with dozens of labels, but rather a complement to the traditional food. Alongside wine, guests can order beer, soft drinks, and homemade brandies or liqueurs, depending on the current offerings.
Momčin Dvor is best suited for guests who wish to sample authentic island cuisine in an informal setting. It is not a place for a quick meal between beaches, but rather for a leisurely dinner by the grill, accompanied by homemade wine and dishes prepared without haste. Portions are often described in reviews as generous, so when ordering multiple starters and main courses, one should consider their size.
The konoba primarily operates in the evenings and is closely tied to the tourist season. Published opening hours may vary, and it is advisable not to arrive without prior confirmation outside the main summer months. Reservations are recommended even during the summer, as the courtyard has a limited number of tables, and prior arrangements are essential for dishes cooked under the peka.
Momčin Dvor is approximately two kilometres from the Rogač ferry port. It takes just a few minutes by car, and Grohote is connected to Rogač and other island settlements by bus. From the bus stop in the centre of Grohote, it is a short walk to the konoba.
The old town centre has narrow streets and is not practical for finding parking directly outside. It is best to leave the car in a permitted area along the wider road or in the central part of Grohote and walk the last few minutes. When arriving, care should be taken not to block access for residents or surrounding houses.
Due to its location in the old stone core, access may involve uneven surfaces and narrow passages. Guests with reduced mobility are advised to check the easiest access and table arrangements in the courtyard when making a reservation.
Konoba Momčin Dvor is one of the better choices on Šolta for those looking to venture beyond the coastal tourist spots and experience the traditional cuisine of the island's interior. The tranquil stone courtyard, the fire in the hearth, and the grilled meat and fish, along with the dishes cooked under the peka that need to be ordered in advance, are particularly memorable.
