Gambo in Mrtinovik Bay – Fresh Fish and a Tavern Almost by the Sea
Gambo is one of the most unusual taverns on eastern Hvar. It is located in the secluded Mrtinovik Bay, on the southern coast of the island, west of Sućuraj, right next to a pebble beach and a small harbour. There is no jetty, no row of restaurants, nor a typical tourist promenade – access to the tavern is through a bay surrounded by the sea, rocky slopes, and Mediterranean greenery.
The uniqueness of Gambo lies not in a large menu but rather in the opposite. The tavern is known for its straightforward approach, preparing what is available that day: primarily fresh fish, octopus, and other seafood, accompanied by Dalmatian sides, local wine, and occasional meat dishes.
Mrtinovik is one of the bays that is most naturally reached by boat, making Gambo particularly popular among sailors who come here for lunch or dinner and stay on a mooring buoy in front of the tavern.
A Tavern Without a Traditional Menu
Gambo differs from restaurants where one can peruse a lengthy menu before arrival.
The offerings rely on daily available ingredients. Fresh fish and octopus are at the centre, and depending on the catch and arrangements, shrimp and other seafood as well as meat can be prepared.
This way of operating suits the location best. Instead of choosing from dozens of fixed dishes, it makes more sense to ask what has come in from the sea that day and what is being prepared on the grill.
For this reason, Gambo is particularly appealing to guests who seek a simple fishing experience rather than a formal restaurant with pre-defined plates.
Grilled Fresh Fish
Grilled fish is most in keeping with the character of this tavern.
Mrtinovik is far enough from the tourist centre that the entire experience feels more like lunch in a small fishing bay than a classic dinner in a restaurant.
Alongside the fish, simple Dalmatian sides and salads are served, without the need for heavy sauces to mask the fresh ingredients.
Octopus is also one of the products regularly associated with Gambo's offerings, and sources aimed at sailors particularly highlight fresh fish and octopus as the foundation of the cuisine.
Shrimp, Local Wine, and Long Lunches by the Sea
Alongside fish, shrimp also feature on the menu, and local wine is part of the concept.
One does not necessarily come here for a quick lunch before continuing on their journey. The location in the bay invites a slower meal, swimming, and a few hours spent by the sea.
This is especially true for guests arriving by boat. After mooring, they can swim in the bay, head to the tavern, and enjoy lunch without needing further transport.
This combination of swimming, boating, fresh fish, and a very simple atmosphere makes Gambo different from restaurants in Sućuraj itself.
Mrtinovik – A Small and Sheltered Bay
Mrtinovik Bay is located on the southeastern coast of Hvar, approximately ten kilometres west of Sućuraj.
The bay is indented and well sheltered from northern winds, making it appealing to sailors. Along the coast, there is a pebble area suitable for swimming, while the surrounding terrain remains largely natural and free from significant development.
Gambo is situated right by the sea, so the boundary between going to the beach and dining at the restaurant practically disappears.
However, Mrtinovik is not a good choice in all weather conditions. Being open to the south, during strong southerly winds and swells, conditions for vessels and staying in the bay can be unfavourable.
Arriving by Boat
For Gambo, arriving by boat is the most natural way.
In front of the tavern, there are several mooring buoys designated for guests. The number of spots is limited, so it is advisable to check availability in advance during the peak season.
Nautical sources for Mrtinovik indicate mooring depths of approximately 6 to 10 metres, and the bay can accommodate larger vessels, but the available space is not extensive.
When arriving by boat, one should pay attention to the forecast, especially regarding southerly winds. Mrtinovik provides good shelter from northern directions, but it is not a place to remain under adverse southern conditions.
Can You Reach Gambo by Car?
It is possible to approach by land, but this is not a restaurant accessible via a typical paved road and large car park.
A local access road branches off from the main island roads towards Mrtinovik, and the final stretch is unpaved through natural terrain. The last part of the road can be rough, especially after rain or damage during the season.
For this reason, one should not assume that reaching the shore will be easy with a low personal vehicle without prior verification. A safer option may be to leave the vehicle earlier at a suitable location and walk the final part.
Access is simpler with an off-road vehicle, but the condition of the unpaved road can change from year to year.
If the aim is solely to visit Gambo, arriving by boat makes much more sense and best suits the location.
Parking
There is no typical designated restaurant parking area as one would expect at a roadside restaurant.
The space in the bay is limited and natural, so vehicles should be parked in a way that does not block access roads or surrounding land.
Before leaving by car, it is useful to check the current condition of the final part of the road, especially if driving a lower vehicle.
Reservations Are Advisable
At Gambo, making a reservation is more useful than at the average restaurant.
The reason is not only the number of tables but also the way of operating. The offerings depend on daily ingredients, and sailors often wish to reserve a spot on a buoy at the same time.
If arriving in a larger group or if a specific dish such as meat or a dish requiring longer preparation is desired, it is best to arrange this in advance.
The same applies to arriving by boat during July and August, when the limited number of buoys may be occupied.
Cash is the Safest Option
Due to its isolated location, one should not expect the infrastructure found in the centre of Sućuraj.
Current sources for Gambo indicate cash payment, so it is best to bring enough money and not rely on card payments.
In such a bay, one should also not count on a stable mobile signal or Wi-Fi as something that is always available.
This actually suits the character of the place well: Gambo is interesting precisely because it still feels removed from typical tourist infrastructure.
Swimming Before or After Lunch
Mrtinovik has a small pebbly stretch of coast and clear waters, so it is best to combine Gambo with swimming.
If arriving by boat, it is easy to spend several hours in the bay – mooring, swimming, lunch, and resting before continuing the journey.
Even when arriving by land, it makes sense to bring swimwear, as it would be a shame to traverse the unpaved access just for a short meal and leave immediately.
This is a location for half a day, not just a restaurant to stop at for twenty minutes.
Gambo or a Restaurant in the Centre of Sućuraj?
These are two completely different experiences.
In the centre of Sućuraj, restaurants like Mizarola, Fortica, or Gusarska Luka have easy pedestrian access, a jetty, and all other amenities nearby.
Gambo is chosen when one desires a secluded bay, a boat, swimming, and simple fishing cuisine.
Therefore, it should not be compared solely by the number of dishes or the size of the terrace. Its main value lies in its location and how the food fits into the overall experience in Mrtinovik.
