Mvsevm Vis – specialty coffee, Croatian wines, and a maritime collection in the heart of Vis
Mvsevm is one of the more unusual spots in the town of Vis – it serves as a specialty coffee bar, wine bar, and a small private museum of maritime history all at once. Tucked away in Korzo, slightly set back from the main waterfront, it can easily be missed if one is unaware of what lies behind the door.
In the morning, visitors come primarily for the expertly prepared coffee, while later in the day, the atmosphere shifts entirely, transforming Mvsevm into a place for a glass of wine, Dalmatian snacks, and a more relaxed evening. This all unfolds amidst antique furniture, porcelain, and hundreds of original items related to maritime and naval history that have traversed the Adriatic over the centuries.
This unique combination is what makes Mvsevm special. It is not a museum with a bar added on, nor a bar adorned with a few old items – the collection and the hospitality aspect are conceived as a cohesive whole.
Specialty coffee is taken seriously
Mvsevm began developing its specialty coffee offering back in 2019, at a time when such options were virtually non-existent in Vis.
The coffee is sourced from specialty roasters, with Zagreb's Cogito Coffee Roasters playing a significant role, and the preparation method is considerably more precise than that found in a typical island café. Espresso is dosed and monitored during extraction, and alternative brewing methods are also available.
It is worth asking which coffee is currently being used, as the beans and their origins change. This is part of the concept – the aim is not to always have the same flavour, but to showcase different varieties, countries of origin, and characteristics of specialty coffee.
Coffee is often served in vintage porcelain cups, which complements the overall setting and gives the morning visit a distinctly different character from the usual coffee by the waterfront.
A wine bar with a focus on Croatia
In the evening, Mvsevm transforms into a serious wine bar.
The wine list is not composed solely of the most well-known commercial labels. The emphasis is on Croatian wines, smaller Dalmatian producers, indigenous varieties, and natural wines, alongside a few classic labels from other Croatian regions.
Many wines are available by the glass, so there is no need to order a whole bottle immediately. This is particularly appealing for those wishing to sample several different Dalmatian varieties or compare wines from Vis with those from other parts of Croatia.
It makes sense to ask for recommendations here. Wines are selected not just based on price or name recognition, but according to style, producer, and the story behind the bottle, and discussing the wine is an integral part of the experience.
Dalmatian snacks to accompany the wine
Mvsevm is not a restaurant and should not be planned as such. The food is primarily intended as an accompaniment to the wine.
They offer cold Dalmatian snacks and platters featuring cheeses, cured meats, and other local delicacies, with anchovies and smaller Mediterranean bites also making an appearance.
This is sufficient for a light dinner or sharing alongside a bottle of wine, but it is not a place to come for a substantial main course, grilled fish, or a full restaurant menu.
This is how Mvsevm functions best – a few smaller bites, various wines by the glass, and ample time to explore what is displayed on the shelves and walls.
Over 3,000 items in a private collection
The most distinctive feature of the space surrounds the tables.
The family collection now comprises over 3,000 historical items, with approximately 600 of them on display within Mvsevm itself. The collection is strongly focused on the maritime and military history of the Adriatic, which is particularly interesting in Vis – an island that has been an important maritime and military point due to its strategic location for centuries.
Among the items are maritime equipment, parts of uniforms, weapons, insignia, documents, and numerous other objects related to various navies and periods.
Some items originate from Vis and old island homes, while a large part of the collection has been gathered over the years through travels and from collectors.
A torpedo and rare maritime artefacts
Particular attention is drawn to items related to the development of naval warfare.
The collection includes a historical torpedo linked to the Rijeka tradition of torpedo production, which made a long journey to end up in Vis.
Such items set Mvsevm apart from spaces that merely use old objects as decoration. There is a concrete history behind much of the collection that the owners are well acquainted with and are eager to explain to interested guests.
This is why it is worthwhile to ask questions if something catches your eye. Many items on the walls and shelves have stories that cannot be fully understood just by looking.
A space of just a few dozen square metres
Mvsevm is not large. The interior space is approximately 80 square metres, making the entire collection feel quite dense and almost cabinet-like.
Old cabinets, tables, porcelain, military items, and maritime artefacts are not separated into classic museum displays with lengthy explanations. One sits among them, enjoying coffee or wine, and the space is explored almost casually.
There are also a few tables outside, in a quieter part of Korzo. To fully experience the concept of the place, it is worth stepping inside at least briefly.
Mornings and evenings have a completely different character
Mvsevm is particularly interesting because the same space operates in two distinct ways throughout the day.
In the morning, the focus is on coffee. The atmosphere is quiet, allowing one to sit with an espresso or filter coffee and browse the collection without the evening crowds.
In the evening, wine and small snacks take centre stage. At this time, the space resembles an intimate wine bar, and the extensive wine list and historical interior create an atmosphere that is hard to find elsewhere in Vis.
If staying in the town for a few days, Mvsevm can therefore be visited twice, offering nearly two different experiences.
Location in the centre of Vis
Mvsevm is located in Korzo, right in the town of Vis, but it is not directly on the main coastal line.
It is just a short walk from the waterfront, tucked among the houses behind the shore. The ferry port is only a few minutes away on foot, so a car is not necessary if already staying in the town.
The location, slightly away from the busiest part of the waterfront, suits the character of the place – it is quieter, more intimate, and sufficiently hidden that Mvsevm still feels like a place to be discovered.
Parking
Mvsevm does not have its own large parking area.
If arriving by car from another part of the island, it is best to use public parking in Vis and continue the last part on foot.
As it is located in the town centre, guests staying in Vis and sailors moored in the harbour do not need a car.
