The Jail Bar in Komiža – Cocktails in the Old Paržun
The Jail is one of the more unusual bars in Komiža, primarily due to the space it occupies. It is hidden in Ribarska Street, right by the coast of the old part of the town, in a space that once served as the local prison. The local term paržun means prison, so it is still common among the residents of Komiža to say they are going 'to Paržun.'
Today, behind the former prison bars, there are bottles of wine and cocktails, but the space has not completely lost its old character. The stone walls, narrow passages, and preserved details of the former prison make The Jail interesting even before ordering anything. This is not a themed bar that has been retrofitted to look like a prison – it is the actual old space repurposed for a new venue.
First, Step Inside, Don't Just Sit Outside
At The Jail, it is worth peeking inside even if you prefer to sit outside. The former prison rooms and bars are part of the whole story, and without them, it is easy to miss what sets this bar apart from others in Komiža.
The space is not large, which suits it well. There is no feeling of a large tourist terrace or a classic cocktail bar with rows of tables. It feels more like a hidden spot found among the old houses of Komiža.
There are passages leading to the sea through the old houses, so the sea is practically right behind the bar. However, do not expect a large open terrace right on the waterfront with an unobstructed view of the entire bay. The atmosphere of The Jail is more shaped by the old space, stone, proximity to the sea, and the fact that you are sitting in the former Paržun.
Signature Cocktails Suit the Place Best
If you are visiting for the first time, it makes more sense to try one of their signature cocktails rather than ordering something that can be found in any bar.
The names are even themed around the prison story – O.G. Escape, Fresh Out, Spirit Smuggler, and Night Watch are among the cocktails that The Jail particularly highlights. The menu may change between seasons, so it is advisable to ask the bartender what the current best choice is if you want something fresher, stronger, or less sweet.
This is not a place where cocktails are merely an addition to coffee and beer. The cocktail bar is one of the main identities of the venue, so more attention is given to drinks than in a regular café bar.
If you do not like very sweet cocktails, it is best to mention this when ordering. The same goes for the strength of the alcohol – the staff can recommend something good more easily when they know what style of drink is being sought.
Local Wines Are Another Good Reason to Visit
The Jail also functions as a wine bar, making it worth considering if you want to try more local wines during your stay in Vis without going for a classic tasting at a winery.
Vis is particularly interesting for its vugava and plavac mali, and the selection of local wines may vary depending on the season and availability. Instead of automatically ordering a well-known label, it is better to ask what they currently have from Vis and what they offer by the glass.
This is a more pleasant way to get to know several wines than ordering a whole bottle blindly. If you particularly like one, then it makes sense to switch to a bottle.
Along with wine, simple snacks or platters may be available. However, The Jail is not a restaurant, so do not plan for a full dinner here. It is better to combine it with dinner elsewhere in Komiža and save it for a glass of wine or a cocktail before or after the meal.
A Good Place Before Dinner, but Even Better After
The Jail is very close to restaurants on the Komiža waterfront, making it easy to fit into an evening without special planning.
One good option is to arrive early for an aperitif, then go for dinner and return later. Another, perhaps even better, is to dine on the waterfront and then move a few dozen meters away from the busiest promenade to finish the evening in Paržun.
Later in the evening, the space takes on more of a bar character, and this is when cocktails and the old prison ambiance work best together.
Musical Evenings Are Not Uncommon
The Jail occasionally hosts DJ nights, acoustic performances, and other smaller musical events. These are not necessarily daily programs, so it is advisable to check the schedule during your stay in Komiža.
An acoustic evening here fits particularly well with the space because the bar is small, and the performer is not far from the audience as they would be on a large stage. When there are no events, the atmosphere is calmer and more suitable for conversation over wine or cocktails.
Thus, two visits to The Jail do not have to look the same. One evening it can be a very relaxed wine bar, and another a much livelier place with music.
The Morning and Evening Atmosphere Are Different
The Jail operates during the day in the season, but the true character of the place is felt in the evening.
In the morning, the old part of Komiža is quieter, and it is interesting to see the space without the evening crowd. For someone who just wants to explore Paržun and have a drink in a calmer atmosphere, this can be a better choice.
In the evening, people come primarily for wine, cocktails, and atmosphere. This is when the whole idea of the bar comes to life.
Opening hours may change during the season, so it is advisable to check them on the same day, especially if planning to visit in the afternoon.
How to Find The Jail
The bar is located on Ribarska Street, in the old part of Komiža, very close to the sea and the main waterfront. It takes just a few minutes to walk from the center.
It is not a large venue with a prominent terrace visible from the other side of the harbor, so it can be missed if you only stick to the main waterfront. You need to enter among the old stone houses and follow Ribarska Street.
Driving here makes little sense. The old part of Komiža is best explored on foot, and vehicles should be left in public parking before entering the narrower center.
Who Will Enjoy The Jail the Most
The Jail is a good choice for couples and small groups looking for something more interesting than just another ordinary bar by the waterfront. It will particularly appeal to cocktail and wine lovers, as well as anyone who values the space they are sitting in.
It is not the best choice if you are looking for a full dinner, a large club, or a bar with a huge terrace and a view over the entire harbor. Its advantage is precisely the opposite: a small old space, a story that does not need to be invented, and a few good drinks behind the bars of the former Komiža prison.
There are places in Komiža with better open views of the sunset, but it is hard to find another where you can say you spent the evening in a true Paržun. For this reason, The Jail is worth including at least once in your evening stroll through old Komiža.
