Konoba Šešula – Fish, Peka and Dinner by the Sea in a Quiet Cove
Konoba Šešula is situated on the southern side of the cove of the same name, just outside Maslinice. It is not a restaurant on the town's waterfront that one might stumble upon during an evening stroll, but rather a destination chosen specifically for its seaside location, tranquil atmosphere, and the feeling of having temporarily escaped from the settlement.
We prefer to visit Šešula in the early evening. At this time, the cove calms down, the daytime bathers gradually leave, and the tables are occupied by sailors, families, and guests who have come from Maslinice for dinner. The terrace is right by the sea, surrounded by greenery and the rocky shores of the cove, creating a more relaxed and natural ambience than that found in restaurants in the town centre.
What to Eat at Konoba Šešula
The cuisine is based on well-known Dalmatian and Mediterranean dishes. The menu features fresh fish, squid, octopus, shellfish, risottos, pasta, grilled meat, salads, and simpler dishes for children.
Here, we often choose fish or something from the grill. It is best to ask what is fresh that day, as the daily catch can vary. Fish can be prepared grilled or in another manner by arrangement, and it typically comes with potatoes, vegetables, or Swiss chard.
Starters include octopus salad, tuna tartare, Dalmatian prosciutto, cheese, or black risotto. The menu also features pasta with shrimp, fish soup, sea bass fillet, tuna steak, and other seafood and meat dishes.
Peka Must Be Ordered in Advance
One of the reasons to visit such a konoba is the peka. This can be fish, meat, or octopus, depending on the arrangement and available ingredients.
Peka should not be ordered once you are seated at the table, as it requires considerable time to prepare. It is best to arrange this in advance, ideally at the time of reservation. This way, the type of meat or fish, number of people, and arrival time can be confirmed.
For a group wanting a true Dalmatian lunch or dinner, peka served with salad, homemade bread, and wine is often a better choice than ordering several individual dishes. The offering of peka, fish, grilled meat, pasta, and salads is part of the long-standing concept of this konoba.
Terrace Right by the Sea
The greatest asset of Konoba Šešula is not just the food but the entire location. The tables are positioned by the sea, within a deep and well-protected cove that is free from traffic and urban noise.
During the day, the terrace is ideal for lunch after swimming, but we find it most pleasant in the evening. At this time, the heat subsides, the cove becomes shadier, and the lights from boats and the shore create a very serene island atmosphere.
The restaurant has an informal vibe. There is no need to dress up as one would for dinner at a hotel restaurant, but it is wise to consider that people usually linger here longer, especially when ordering fish or peka for the whole group.
Arriving by Boat
Šešula is particularly well-known among sailors. The konoba has moorings available for guests arriving by boat, and upon arrival, a bow mooring is used with additional stern securing to the shore.
It is advisable to call ahead before entering the cove to check if a mooring is available. This is especially important during July and August when many sailboats and catamarans arrive at Šešula in the evening.
The cove is deeply recessed and well-protected from most wind directions, but sailors should still monitor the forecast and follow the restaurant staff's instructions when mooring.
The terrace is practically just a short walk from the boat, which is one reason why Šešula is popular for dinner and overnight stays at anchor or moored.
Walking from Maslinice
It takes approximately 15 minutes to walk from the centre of Maslinice to Konoba Šešula. The path leads to the southern edge of the village and then descends towards the cove. The konoba also states that it is accessible by foot, car, and boat.
The walk is not long, but the return after dinner is uphill and partly along a poorly lit path. Therefore, it is advisable to carry a mobile phone with a flashlight or a small handheld lamp in the evening.
For the hottest part of the day, it is wise to bring water and sun protection, as there is no continuous shade along the route.
Arriving by Car and Parking
A road from Maslinice leads to the cove, but the last part of the approach is narrower than the main island roads. It is necessary to drive slowly, especially when two vehicles meet or when pedestrians are walking along the road.
The konoba does not have a large designated public car park as one might expect near a hotel or larger restaurant. Vehicles are left in available widenings and spaces along the approach, ensuring they do not obstruct other cars or access to houses and konobas in the cove.
During the peak season, it is better to arrive a bit earlier as the number of practical spaces is limited. It is often more pleasant to walk from Maslinice than to drive, especially if you are not with small children or individuals with limited mobility.
Reservation
For dinner in July and August, making a reservation is highly recommended. This is particularly necessary if you are arriving by larger boat, need a mooring, want a table by the sea, or plan to order peka.
When making a reservation, it is best to specify immediately:
- the number of people
- whether you are arriving by car, on foot, or by boat
- whether you need a mooring
- whether you want fish or peka
- whether you have small children or special dietary requirements
The konoba operates seasonally, so it is advisable to check the opening hours outside the main summer months before your visit.
Who Will Enjoy Konoba Šešula
Konoba Šešula is the best choice for guests looking for dinner away from the centre of Maslinice, right by the sea and without the hustle and bustle of the town. It is particularly suitable for sailors, families, and groups wanting fresh fish, grilled dishes, or pre-ordered peka.
It may be less suitable for those seeking a quick meal, ample parking right at the entrance, or a restaurant that is easily accessible via a flat and well-lit path.
This is a place to experience the entire atmosphere: the tranquil cove, a table by the sea, boats moored just a few metres from the terrace, and a dinner that does not end in a hurry. For this reason, Konoba Šešula is one of those places that best showcases what a summer evening outside the Maslinice waterfront looks like.
