St Mary Magdalene Church in Svirče – the only church with a dome on Hvar
The parish church of St Mary Magdalene is one of the most recognisable symbols of Svirče and one of the architecturally most interesting churches on the island of Hvar. It is located on the edge of the old village, amidst stone houses, cypress trees, and the vineyard landscape of the island's interior.
It is particularly notable for its large central dome – no other church on Hvar has such a shape. The current structure is the result of centuries of development: a medieval church dedicated to St Elijah once stood on the same site, followed by the church of St Mary Magdalene, and the present appearance was largely shaped by an expansion at the beginning of the 20th century.
From the medieval church of St Elijah to the present parish church
The history of the sacred space in Svirče is much older than the current building.
At this location, there was a church dedicated to St Elijah, mentioned in the Hvar Statute from 1331. In church records from 1579, St Elijah reappears, while in 1586, the church of St Mary Magdalene with a chapel of St Elijah is mentioned.
The parish of Svirče was established in 1690, making the church the centre of religious life in the village.
The church from 1777
The construction of the new church of St Mary Magdalene was completed in 1777.
This is still evidenced by the inscription above the main portal. From this period, part of the valuable church inventory has been preserved after the later expansion.
Svirče grew during the 19th century, and the old church eventually became too small for the population.
Major expansion at the beginning of the 20th century
The church acquired its current appearance at the beginning of the 20th century.
The significant extension was completed in 1914, when the space of the old church was considerably increased. It was at this time that the characteristic architectural ensemble with the central dome, which now dominates the appearance of Svirče, was created.
The expanded church was consecrated on 22 July 1914, on the feast day of St Mary Magdalene, by Bishop Juraj Carić, who was born in Svirče.
The only church dome on Hvar
The dome is a feature that immediately identifies the church.
Churches on Hvar generally have elongated stone naves, bell towers, or spires, while the central dome of St Mary Magdalene is a completely different element. It is precisely because of this that the building has a shape that is not replicated in any other church on the island.
The dome is visible from various parts of Svirče and, along with the free-standing bell tower, defines the silhouette of the village.
Free-standing stone bell tower
To the south of the main entrance stands a free-standing bell tower.
The separation of the bell tower from the main building further emphasises the unusual appearance of the entire complex. The stone structure of the bell tower blends well with the older architecture of Svirče and the surrounding houses.
In the area around the church, tall cypress trees grow, further accentuating the vertical lines of the bell tower and dome.
Baroque portal from the older church
The main façade retains a Baroque portal.
The profiled stone doorposts are decorated with diamond motifs at the lower part, while above the door is a shaped lintel and an open arched gable.
Such elements remind us that the present large church was formed by the expansion of a much older building, rather than the construction of an entirely new structure.
What can be seen inside?
The main altar from the 18th century has been preserved from the church of that era.
The altar of Our Lady of Mount Carmel, featuring a statue of the Virgin Mary in a niche, has also been preserved. The interior of the current church is more spacious than one might expect when viewing the village from the outside, and the high central space beneath the dome gives it a special character.
The church is an active parish church, not a museum object.
Can the church be visited inside?
The church does not have a published regular tourist opening time.
The interior can be viewed when the church is open for mass, religious celebrations, or other parish events. Outside of these times, the doors may be locked, so one should not rely on the church being open throughout the day.
If viewing the interior is particularly important, it is best to plan a visit around a mass or local religious celebration, or to check in advance for entry possibilities.
The exterior of the church complex can be freely explored.
St Mandalina – the patron saint of Svirče
St Mary Magdalene is the patron saint of the parish and one of the most important saints in local tradition.
In Svirče, locals traditionally refer to her as St Mandalina. Her feast day is celebrated every year on 22 July, when mass and a procession around the church take place.
This is one of the most important days in the annual life of the village, when many people with family roots connected to the place return to Svirče.
Svirče and the Za križen procession
The parish of Svirče is one of six parishes involved in the renowned Za križen procession.
The procession takes place on the night of Maundy Thursday to Good Friday and connects Jelsa, Pitve, Vrisnik, Svirče, Vrbanj, and Vrboska. Each procession departs from its parish church and visits the other five places before returning.
Thus, St Mary Magdalene Church is significant not only as a historical building but also as a living centre of one of the most important traditions in central Hvar.
The church as a landmark in a vineyard village
Svirče has been associated with viticulture and agriculture for centuries.
Vineyards and olive groves surround the village, and the old stone houses, narrow passages, and courtyards create an atmosphere that is very different from the tourist spots on the coast.
The large church with a dome rises above this landscape and is one of the best landmarks when exploring the village.
How to get from Jelsa
Svirče is approximately four kilometres from Jelsa.
You can reach it by car via the local road into the island's interior. The village can also be accessed from the west via Vrbanj, making it easy to include the church in a tour of Pitve, Vrisnik, and Svirče.
You can drive to the area of the church, but the last streets through the village are occasionally narrower, which is typical for old Hvar settlements.
Parking by the church
There is no large designated tourist parking area next to the church as found at larger attractions.
It is best to leave your car in the available public space in the wider area of the church or in the village, where parking does not obstruct traffic and access to homes. From there, it is very easy to continue on foot to the church.
Svirče is a small place, so distances are not great. Therefore, it makes little sense to try to drive into every narrow part of the old centre when it can be reached on foot in a few minutes.
It is worth strolling through the rest of Svirče
The church of St Mary Magdalene is not the only point of interest in the village.
In the centre of Svirče, there is a chapel of the Immaculate Conception of the Blessed Virgin Mary on the old Pjaca, and at the entrance to the village, a large stylised sculpture of a vine, created by local artist Dinko Vranković, stands out.
It is worth wandering through the old streets with stone houses, bridges, and courtyards, and connecting your visit with an introduction to the village's viticultural tradition.
Why is it worth visiting St Mary Magdalene Church?
Hvar has a large number of old and valuable churches, but Svirče's St Mary Magdalene easily stands out from all the others.
The centuries-long continuity of the sacred site, the Baroque elements of the old church, the expansion from 1914, the free-standing bell tower, and above all, the unique dome create a building with its own identity.
For a visitor exploring the villages in the interior of Hvar, this is one of the churches that should definitely be included in the tour.
