Ruby Pancake & Ice Cream in Komiža
Ruby Pancake & Ice Cream is located on Ribarska Street, on the northern side of the old Komiža, just a few minutes' walk from the waterfront towards Gusarica. It is a small seasonal establishment that is best remembered for those moments when, after swimming or dinner, one craves something decidedly sweet – a pancake with a rich filling or a few scoops of ice cream to continue the seaside stroll.
Ruby is not a traditional patisserie with a wide selection of cakes and pastries. The main focus is on pancakes and ice cream, making the choice straightforward. Pancakes are made to order, the fillings are generous, and they can also be taken away.
Pancakes are the main reason to visit
If it’s your first visit, it’s worth opting for a pancake rather than just ice cream. This is not about a thin pancake with a smear of filling; it’s a substantial dessert that can easily replace a late evening sweet treat.
The range of fillings is extensive. There are classic combinations with chocolate spreads, biscuits, and various sweets, as well as richer options with multiple toppings. It’s best to check the current menu first, as some combinations may change throughout the season.
If you choose one of the richer pancakes, be aware that it can be quite filling. For two people who have just finished dinner, sharing one is often more than enough.
A good spot for lovers of sweet combinations
Ruby will particularly appeal to those who seek more than just jam or a bit of chocolate on their pancake. Here, the focus is on fuller combinations, with more creams, chocolate, and toppings.
For this reason, it’s advisable to ask what is included in each pancake before ordering. Some are much sweeter and heavier than others, so after a hearty dinner, a simpler combination is often a better choice.
This menu is especially attractive to children, as they can choose between pancakes and ice cream, and the wide variety of possible toppings is usually more interesting than the standard selection of a few desserts in a restaurant.
Ice cream for a walk towards Gusarica
You don’t always have to sit down for a pancake. Ice cream is more practical when simply passing through Ribarska Street towards Gusarica or when wanting to continue a walk along the sea after dinner.
It can be served in a cone or cup, and the selection of flavours should be checked on-site as it changes. The scoops are large enough that it’s worth assessing how much you can actually eat before ordering multiple flavours.
For children, a cup is more practical during warm evenings, especially when the ice cream melts quickly.
A takeaway pancake makes sense
Ruby offers pancakes to go, which is more useful here than it may sound. The establishment is close to the sea, so you can take your dessert and continue towards Gusarica or find a quieter spot along the coast.
The pancake is packaged so that it can be easily taken away and enjoyed a little further from the venue. This is convenient when you don’t want to wait for a free table or simply wish to return to your apartment.
However, with pancakes that have a lot of ice cream or delicate toppings, it’s better to eat them right away, especially during warm summer evenings.
A pleasant stop during an evening stroll
The location is one of the reasons why Ruby works well. It’s not on the busiest part of the main waterfront, but a little further through the old Komiža, in an area that naturally leads towards Gusarica.
This makes it easy to incorporate into an evening walk. After dinner on the waterfront, one can stroll down Ribarska Street, grab a pancake or ice cream, and continue towards the northern part of the bay.
From this part of Komiža, there are lovely views across the harbour and towards the opposite side of the bay, so there’s no need to eat dessert confined indoors if the evening outside is pleasant.
Don’t count on morning coffee and breakfast
Ruby is primarily a afternoon and evening dessert spot. It’s not a place to plan for a morning breakfast before an outing.
During the season, it opens later in the day and operates in the evening, which suits it best. Opening hours may vary throughout the season, so it’s advisable to check the current times on the same day if you plan to arrive just before opening or closing.
The busiest time naturally comes after dinner, when the whole of Komiža heads to the waterfront for a stroll. For a quieter visit, it’s better to stop by earlier in the evening.
Card or cash
Card payments are accepted, which is useful as smaller seasonal establishments on the islands may not always be able to process card payments. However, it’s never a bad idea to have some cash on hand in Komiža.
For larger groups, it’s best to order all at once, especially if everyone wants a different pancake. Since they are made to order, during busy evening hours, expect a bit more waiting time compared to regular ice cream.
Who will Ruby appeal to the most?
Ruby is a good choice for families, younger visitors, and anyone who enjoys generous pancakes with plenty of toppings. It’s particularly welcome after several evenings where dessert in a restaurant has been skipped, and one later craves something sweet during a walk.
It shouldn’t be compared to Cukar. People go to Cukar for artisanal cakes, carob, figs, sage, and other flavours of Vis. Ruby is sought for something entirely different – large pancakes, chocolate, ice cream, and desserts that don’t attempt to be light.
Gelateria Riva is a better choice when you simply want to quickly grab a few scoops in the centre. Ruby makes more sense when you really want a pancake and are ready to turn dessert into a small evening meal.
