Konoba Roki Fire – Peka and local wine in the interior of Vis

Konoba Roki Fire is one of the more well-known spots on Vis for traditional peka, but it is important to note that the restaurant is no longer located at its former site in Plisko Polje. Since May 2025, Roki Fire has been operating at a new location in the area of Dol, just a few minutes' drive from the town of Vis.

With the move, the space has changed, but the concept for which the Roki family has been known for years has been retained – Dalmatian dishes prepared without haste, with peka as the main specialty, using local ingredients and wines from Vis. The new location is more spacious, features a large outdoor area, and has its own parking, making it easy to arrive by car.

This is not a restaurant where you can simply drop in for peka without prior planning. Dishes cooked under the peka take hours to prepare and must be ordered in advance, which is an essential part of the overall experience.

Peka is the main reason to visit

The hallmark of Konoba Roki Fire remains peka, which consists of meat, fish, or octopus slowly cooked with potatoes and vegetables under an iron lid covered with embers.

Options include peka made from lamb, veal, fish, and octopus, with a vegetarian variant also available. The long cooking process allows the juices from the meat or fish to meld with the potatoes, vegetables, olive oil, and spices, which is why peka cannot be prepared just after a guest arrives.

According to the restaurant's current rules, peka must be ordered at least four hours in advance. During July and August, it is advisable to book even earlier, as the number of peka that can be prepared at one time is naturally limited by the size of the fireplace and the time required for cooking.

Peka is prepared for multiple people and works best as a shared dish at the table, rather than as a classic individual portion ordered just before serving.

What else can be eaten

Roki Fire is not limited to peka alone. Following the move, a broader daily menu has been introduced for guests who wish to have lunch or dinner without the need for hours of prior ordering.

Among the dishes available are swordfish steak, black cuttlefish risotto, and beef with vegetables, and traditional simpler starters such as Vis-style pogača, fish, and meat platters are also served.

Vegetables play an important role in Roki's kitchen. The family has been using vegetables from their own garden for years, so alongside the main dishes, seasonal vegetables are prepared in accordance with the meal.

The menu may change throughout the season, especially regarding fish and other ingredients that depend on availability.

Local wines with peka

The story of the Roki family is much older than the restaurant itself and is closely linked to viticulture. The family has been producing wine for generations, and tasting wine was one of the reasons why the former konoba in Plisko Polje began serving food in the first place.

At the new location, the old winery next to the restaurant is no longer present, which is important as older descriptions of Roki's Winery & Restaurant from Plisko Polje can still be found online.

Nevertheless, the wine offering remains an important part of the dining experience. The focus is on wines from the island of Vis, particularly varieties associated with the island such as Vugava and Plavac Mali, as well as Trbljan. In addition to their own and family-related labels, wines from other local vintners are also offered.

Peka and local wine naturally go together here, making Roki Fire appealing to guests who wish to explore the gastronomic side of Vis beyond the seaside restaurants.

The new Roki Fire in Dol

The move from Plisko Polje is worth mentioning as many older tourist guides, blogs, and reviews still place Roki's among the vineyards of Plisko Polje next to the former family winery.

Since 1 May 2025, the restaurant has been operating at its new location in Dol. The same kitchen and service staff have been retained, as well as the peka cooks and organised transport for guests, but the space itself is new.

The ambience remains connected to the island's interior, away from the crowds of the Vis waterfront. The larger outdoor area is particularly suited for longer lunches and dinners, which fits well with the peka concept – there is no need to rush from one course to another here.

Booking and ordering peka

Reservations at Roki Fire are highly recommended, and during the peak season, they are practically essential.

If you wish to have peka, it is not enough to simply book a table – you must inform them in advance what type of peka you want and for how many people. The restaurant officially requests that peka orders be made at least four hours before arrival.

For regular dishes from the daily menu, prior ordering is not necessary, but it is still advisable to reserve a table during summer evenings.

Reservations can also be arranged via WhatsApp.

Organised transport to the restaurant

For guests without a car, Roki Fire offers organised transport to the restaurant. This is particularly convenient for sailors who have arrived in Vis by boat or for guests who wish to enjoy wine in the evening without worrying about the return journey.

Transport should be arranged at the time of booking. As conditions and prices for transfers may depend on the number of people and the pick-up location, it is best to check with the restaurant directly.

This is a useful distinction compared to many other konobas in the interior of the island, which are significantly harder to reach without your own transport.

How to get there and parking

The konoba is located in the area of Dol, west of the town of Vis. From the centre of Vis, it is a short drive into the interior of the island.

The new location has a large parking area within the complex, so unlike restaurants on the waterfront, there is no need to search for a free spot in the town or leave your car far from the restaurant.

You can also reach Roki Fire by taxi or pre-arranged transport from the restaurant.

Lunch or dinner

Roki Fire is not exclusively an evening konoba. The restaurant operates most of the day from noon, making it possible to come for a late lunch, which is particularly good for peka as the meal can be organised while it is still daylight, without having to return to town late at night.

According to the currently published opening hours, the restaurant generally operates from 12:00 to 23:30, although specific days may vary. Currently, Saturday's opening time is listed as 16:00.

Opening hours in Vis are highly seasonal, so it is best to check them again before your visit, as well as to confirm your reservation.

Things to know before your visit

If your aim is to try traditional Vis or Dalmatian peka, it makes sense to plan Roki Fire as a distinct part of your day, rather than as a stop where you decide what to eat only after arriving.

The most important thing is to reserve your table and peka in advance. After that, there will be plenty of time for a relaxed dinner in the island's interior, accompanied by local wine and without the crowds that accompany restaurants along the Vis waterfront.

The restaurant has outdoor tables, accepts card payments, and according to current information, dogs are also allowed.
