Fortica Restaurant Sućuraj – Dalmatian Cuisine by the Sea and the Old Fortress
Fortica is one of the longest-standing restaurants in Sućuraj. It is located on the eastern part of the waterfront, just a few dozen metres from the historic Fortica Fortress, after which it is named. The Kačić Bartulović family has been running it since 1983.
The location is very pleasant for lunch or dinner. The restaurant is close enough to the sea and the harbour that diners can enjoy views of the water and Sućuraj Bay from the terrace, while being slightly removed from the busiest part of the waterfront around the ferry terminal.
The cuisine is traditionally Dalmatian, focusing on fresh fish, seafood, and grilled dishes. The menu features squid, octopus, fish, risottos, and pasta with seafood, as well as meat dishes and vegetarian options.

Fortica is not a seasonal restaurant opened due to tourist traffic.
The Kačić Bartulović family has been involved in hospitality here since 1983, giving the restaurant over four decades of continuity. This family character suits Sućuraj well, where the gastronomic offerings remain significantly more intimate than in the larger tourist centres of Hvar.
The concept has modernised over the years, but the foundation remains the same: Dalmatian dishes, fish, seafood, grilled meat, wine, and olive oil.
Grilled Fish, Squid, and Octopus
The seafood section of the menu is the main reason for visiting Fortica.
Fresh grilled fish, squid, and octopus are often on offer, along with fried fish, fish soup, seafood, and various combinations of pasta and risotto.
For fresh fish, it is best to ask what is available that day, as the selection naturally depends on supply.
A classic Dalmatian lunch is a good combination of fish or squid with vegetables, Swiss chard, or another simple side, without the need for complicated sauces or presentations.
Risottos and Pasta with Seafood
Fortica is not limited to grilling.
The menu also includes risottos, pasta with seafood, and other Mediterranean dishes, making the restaurant a practical choice when something lighter than a whole fish is desired.
Black risotto, seafood risotto, or pasta with seafood naturally fit into the offerings of a seaside restaurant like this.

One of the most pleasant parts of the restaurant is the outdoor, glass-enclosed terrace facing the sea.
Fortica is located at the eastern end of Sućuraj's centre, providing a slightly quieter atmosphere than right next to the ferry port. The terrace offers views of the water and part of Sućuraj's harbour.
It is especially pleasant in the evening when the daytime heat and traffic through the village diminish.
Reservations for a table on the terrace during the peak summer season are advisable.
The Fortica After Which the Restaurant is Named
It is just a short walk from the restaurant to the historic Fortica Fortress.
This Venetian fort, built in 1613, was constructed to defend Sućuraj from Ottoman attacks and is one of the most important historical landmarks in the area.
Thus, a lunch or dinner at the restaurant can easily be combined with a visit to the fortress, the old town centre, St. George's Church, and the Franciscan Monastery.
In the other direction, one can continue towards the eastern end of the island and the lighthouse.
A Good Stop Before the Ferry
The Sućuraj ferry terminal is close enough that Fortica can serve as a convenient stop before heading to Drvenik.
However, when travelling by ferry, it is advisable to allow enough time to return to the car, especially during July and August when queues for boarding can form in Sućuraj.
For guests staying in the area, this is not an issue – the restaurant is easily reached by a leisurely walk along the waterfront from the centre.
Desserts
After fish and grilled dishes, the menu also features classic desserts.
Among them, you can find tiramisu, pancakes, panna cotta, and ice cream, depending on the current offerings.
While these are not the main reason for visiting Fortica, they nicely round off a classic lunch or dinner by the sea.
Access and Parking
If you are staying in Sućuraj, it is best to visit the restaurant on foot.
It is located on the waterfront, just a few minutes from the centre, so there is no need to drive to the entrance.
If coming from another part of Hvar, it is more practical to leave your vehicle at available public parking in the wider Sućuraj area and continue on foot. I would not rely on a large dedicated restaurant parking area right next to the establishment, especially during the summer rush.
Access to the restaurant and seating is also available for guests with reduced mobility.
What to Choose?
For a first visit to Fortica, it makes the most sense to start with the seafood offerings.
Grilled squid, octopus, daily fish, or pasta and risotto with seafood best suit the restaurant's location and character.
If you prefer meat, the grill selection is substantial enough that the restaurant should not be viewed solely as a fish establishment.
For daily fish and seafood, it is simply best to ask what is currently available.
